Default 2020 Toyota Supra Outshines BMW M2 Competition At Laguna Seca

The BMW M2 Competition and Toyota Supra are two of the most thrilling and exciting sports cars on the market but which is faster around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca? Motor Trend has the answer.
During the publication’s search for the Best Driver’s Car of 2019, the Supra and M2 Competition were hustled around the circuit back-to-back by racing driver Randy Pobst.

On paper, the BMW has the obvious advantage. Powering the potent M2 is a detuned version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder found in the previous-generation M3 and M4. It cranks out a total of 405 hp.

By comparison, the Toyota Supra also uses a BMW 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine but makes do with a single turbo and produces a claimed 335 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. However, we know that the horsepower and torque figures spruiked by Toyota are very conservative and that the Supra has more grunt than claimed. Even still, the M2 Competition has a clear advantage. On the track, this didn’t matter.

At the hands of Pobst, the Supra lapped Laguna Seca in 1:40.57 compared to the 1:40.83 of the M2 Competition. That’s a very good result for the Toyota and just goes to prove that horsepower and torque figures aren’t the be-all and end-all.

Pobst also preferred driving the Supra on the circuit, describing it as a “pleasure” to toss through the corners despite it being a little prone to oversteer.

Bigger, heavier vs smaller, lighter and purpose-built chassis.
Would've loved to see those 2 cars dyno'd that same day/time together. B58's no joke of an engine.

Both have the older Michelin PSSs but the Zupra has one step wider F&R.

M2C
Front: P245/35R19, rear: P265/35R19

Zupra
Front: P255/35R19, rear: P275/35R19

The stock M2C's 788 wheels are incredibly heavy beasts too. Not sure what the Zupra's weigh in comparison.

Bigger, heavier, and nearly as fast a track tells me the M2C is the superior car IMO.

I used to have a pretty well modded 135i with the N54, was a heck of a car.

As did I - miss my '10 N54 135i. Catless, tuned, beastly.

The reviews of these cars are very close - I'd say they're split down the middle with professional drivers.
Obviously the S55 has more grunt, but the B58 is WAY underrated, which is why it's so close. And you can tune the B58, unlike the 2020+ M2Cs - BMW's done locked it all up and you have to yank your ECU out and mail it to someone to back-rev your ECU in order to tune. B58 also has no crank hub spin problem.

Lot's of driver's favor the Zupra on the race track, lots of drivers favor the M2C. Each behaves differently to arrive at the same result.

Big bummer for the Zupra is no MT, therefore for me, no care.

Let us get a new BRZ with the FA24DIT fully Stg 2 catless Protuned and see where we are then.

Toyota GR Supra Just As Quick As BMW M2 Competition

The lap times of the two sports cars are incredibly close.

While you might have been expecting the Toyota GR Supra to be compared with the BMW Z4 since both cars share the same straight-six engine, Auto Sport decided to pit the Japanese sports car against the mighty BMW M2 Competition Coupe. On paper, this may not seem like a fair comparison.

Under the hood, the BMW M2 Competition uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 410 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota GR Supra, on the other hand, uses the same 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six as the BMW Z4 generating 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.

A less powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo variant is also available with 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. However, trips to the dyno have revealed the GR Supra is more powerful than Toyota claims, producing around 400 hp at the crank.

Both the GR Supra and M2 Competition also sport coupe body styles and send power to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission, although the M2 Competition can also be equipped with a manual. To see how the Toyota GR Supra and the BMW M2 Competition compare, Auto Sport put both cars through their paces around the Hockenheim-GP circuit in Germany.

And to keep things fair, both cars were equipped with the same Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Both cars performed a hot lap around the circuit, and the times were a lot closer than you would think. The BMW M2 Competition lapped the Hockenheim-GP circuit in one minute and 58.4 seconds. The Toyota GR Supra? One minute and 58.9 seconds.

Despite having nearly 40 less hp according to Toyota, the GR Supra was only 0.4 seconds slower than the BMW. That's particularly impressive when you consider the huge price difference between the two models: the Toyota GR Supra 3.0 starts at $49,990, while the BMW M2 Competition will set you back at least $58,900.

Toyota was smart to collaborate with BMW on the Supra.

I'd buy again if something happened to mine.

Let's just patiently wait for you know who to chime in with "it's a Z4!"

I'm just waiting for them to discount the 2021s, they sure had big money on hood fo the 20s and I don't expect the 21 to sell any better. I actually expect Toyota to dump the Supra in 22' and perhaps merge a Lexus platform or maybe dump sports cars all together for now. Toyota is in the sell by millions market.
