The Jaguar F-Type Is Getting a Major Facelift with Some Radical Changes

For the first time in more than six years, Jag's gorgeous sports car is getting a big design overhaul.

While nothing is confirmed, the F-type could receive Jaguar Land Rover's new inline-six engine.

If you can believe it, the Jaguar F-type is getting a bit long in the tooth. First shown in concept form in 2011, the F-type has been on sale since 2013. Jaguar has steadily updated the car with new powertrains and minor styling updates, but new spy photos seem to indicate that the fast cat will be getting its first major facelift in more than six years.

Although almost all of it is covered in a swirly camo wrap, we can see a number of details on this F-type R coupe that set it apart from current F-types. (We know it's an R because of the quad exhaust tips.) Everything ahead of the A-pillars looks to be totally new given the different front fender/bumper cutlines, which are more horizontal than before. While they're almost completely covered up, it looks like the F-type is trading its tall headlights for very slim units reminiscent of those found on other Jags like the I-Pace, which would be a major design change for the model. A sticker that creates a fake cutline is placed above the actual bumper cut to make it seem like this prototype still has taller lights. Look closely, and you can see the outline of the actual lights and the creases that run above and below the lights to create definition.

The grille has the same classic rounded shape with a central bar through it, but the design of the mesh pattern is new. There are also reshaped intakes on each side of the grille that look more angular than before, and the front splitter is slightly different. It also seems like the hood is smoother than the current car's, although there could be a panel covering up the actual design. The only other changes we can see is are at the rear, where the car is getting a redesigned license-plate area and taillights with squared off lower graphics like those on the refreshed XE.

We don't know anything else about this upcoming F-type refresh beyond what we can see here, but that won't stop us from speculating. Jaguar Land Rover recently introduced a brand-new turbocharged and hybridized inline-six engine on a few Range Rover models, with the new six supplanting the existing supercharged V-6. If it fits in the F-type—and given how long the F-type's hood is, we bet it will—we think it's possible the straight-six will replace the V-6 in Jag's sports car, too. Don't expect a manual transmission, as that option was already killed from the V-6 this year and likely hasn't been engineered to work with the straight-six. The base turbocharged four-cylinder and top-end supercharged V-8 engines should remain, as will the all-wheel-drive system that is standard on some F-types and optional on others. The car should receive a number of tech updates to keep it feeling fresh and modern, and the interior could see big changes as well.

There is a chance that what you see here is actually a mule for the next-generation F-type, but we don't think that's likely. All of the new styling elements seen here look extremely production-ready, and there's nothing about this car that indicates it's a test mule using a new platform or powertrain. Ian Callum, Jag's head of design, has all but confirmed a next-gen F-type, but that would be at least a few years away (the next-gen car could get a four-seat layout and/or become an electric car). This facelifted F-type could be revealed as soon as this summer, likely going on sale as a 2021 model.

It was a close call between the F type S, possibly R and my M2. Sometimes I still wonder if I made the right decision.

Возможно, решётка радиатора станет крупнее, как видно на шпионских фотографиях, она избавится от пластиковой перекладины для установки номерного знака.

Оптика станет лейтмотивом обновления и в задней части. У нынешнего спорткара фонари имеют полукруглые выемки, обновлённая же модель получит более широкие трапециевидные. Соответственным образом изменится и графика светодиодных элементов, теперь они будут сделаны в стиле рестайлингового седана Jaguar XE, представленного в этом году.

Как сообщают наши коллеги из Motor1, обновлённый F-Type в самой мощной версии может получить 8-цилиндровый битурбированный мотор 4.4 от BMW, который придёт на замену двигателю 5.0 V8 Supercharged. Немецкий мотор, установленный в новую BMW M8 Competition, развивает 616 л.с. и 750 Нм, что на 41 л.с. и 50 Нм превосходит показатели нынешнего Ягуара. WWell, fellas, that couldn’t be more wrong. There’s even a YouTube video uploaded by TFLnow that shows two F-Type prototypes up close, including what looks like a redesigned front end with longer and narrower headlights that stretch towards the back, in a quasi-similar way to those of the Aston Martin Vantage.

Sorry, folks, but we’ll have to challenge you to have another look at the said rendering and thoroughly compare it to the actual front end of the Vantage to see that things simply don’t add up. The camouflage foil is too thick to reveal anything, and if we’ve learned something during all these years of renderings that pop up online, it’s that they’re almost never spot on when it comes to guessing the actual design of an upcoming model. Heck, Toyota Supra’s headlights look more like the Vantage’s. So, please, make the childish rumors stop.

Now, there are a lot of missing pieces from the 2021 Jaguar F-Type puzzle.

We don’t know for sure whether these test mules are helping Jaguar prepare a facelifted variant of the F-Type or a new generation altogether - chances are it’s the former, but if the latter holds any truth, then expect an evolutionary, a la Volkswagen design approach and not too many fireworks.
Sure, the headlights and taillights will get a redesign, as will most likely the F-Type’s front end and derriere. However, the sports car will flaunt the same roofline, side profile, and pillar layout, hence our argument that this is most likely a mid-life refresh.

While we’re at it, let’s also touch on the performance factor - the F-Type is, first and foremost, a sports car, and customers will want to feel that while they’re driving it. At the time of writing, the F-Type could be had in various flavors. The entry-level model is motivated by a 2.0-liter turbo-four making 296 horsepower, while above it sits a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 that can churn out either 340 horsepower or 380 horsepower, depending on your trim choice.

At the top of the food chain sits the F-Type R packing a 5.0-liter V-8 making 550 horsepower and the F-Type SVR, which extracts 575 horsepower from the same powerplant. However, for the tweaked model, we expect Jaguar to actually turn things up a notch and get its engineers to breathe more grunt into the straight-four and the V-6 mills.

The spicier rumor comes from the R and SVR models, which some are already touting as in line to get BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8.
The unit powers some of BMW’s new models and can crank out up to 617 horsepower inside the M8, yet Jaguar will most likely detune the engine to around 600 horsepower for the SVR.

How the interior of the F-Type will evolve is still a mystery. The video we mentioned before shows that the cockpit topography will stay the same, although we also expect Jaguar to fit the F-Type with some sort of digital instrument cluster that would add a more modern twist to the British sports car’s ethos.

I hate that wing, the front is molded into the bodywork so no air can go under it, but from the back it looks like a traditional wing ... so faux wing ding. A neighbor has it on his and it looks very cheap in real life.

The 2021 Jaguar F-Type will still have the “distinctive roar” of past cars, but the V8 will feature quiet mode so as not to anger the neighbors. But plant the right pedal and it will still pop and crackle on overrun, says Jaguar.

There are new calibrations for the F-Type's Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, electronic rear axle differential and stability control. The electronic power steering has been recalibrated and the F-Type gets new antiroll bars and springs. The dampers are the same, but the valving is different. The rear suspension knuckles are new too, with larger wheel bearings along with revised upper ball joints. The tires are wider, and the wheels are new.

From the outside, the F-Type gets a new hood, revised taillights that give it an I-Pace look and new headlights. The front bumper is new with a new grille and new grille pattern. The surround can be either satin or black depending on options.

“F-Type has always had great proportions and stance, and our latest design is all about enhancing those key Jaguar values. Our aim was to make the car more contemporary, more purposeful and even more dramatic,” said Adam Hatton, exterior design director, Jaguar. “The LED headlamps and the larger front grille give a more assertive presence on the road. We’ve redesigned the exotic clamshell hood to enhance the purity of form and accentuate its length. The beautiful flowing surfaces subtly reference great Jaguar cars of the past, while the new vents blend perfectly into the sculpted aluminum around them.”

The exhaust pipes are powertrain specific. The four-cylinder gets a single, central pipe; the V6 comes with two round pipes; and the V8 gets a quad exhaust. A First Edition model will feature the exterior design pack in contemporary dark satin gray and five-spoke, 20-inch gloss gray with contrast diamond turned finish wheels, complementing the choice of Santorini black, Eiger gray or Fuji white paint.

Inside the Jaguar F-Type, your options are suedecloth or leather and we also get a new 12-inch digital cluster with three themes. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and software updates will be done over the air. There are two options for seats (sports or performance), and the seatbelt guides now get “Jaguar Est. 1935” markings.

The Jaguar F-Type's design is art on wheels, and for 2021 the British sports car moves forward.

The refreshed 2021 Jaguar F-Type coupe and convertible made an online debut on Monday with tweaks to its sleek design, new in-cabin technology, more power, and a focus on fine details.

It won't be hard to pick out the 2021 F-Type at Cars & Coffee next year. The LED headlights are now slim horizontal units (previously they were vertically oriented) to match new, slender LED taillights that are similar to those found in the all-electric I-Pace crossover. A wider, deeper grille gives the F-Type a wider appearance than before.

A new design for the clamshell hood features air vents positioned closer to the front bumper to aid with efficiency, according to Jaguar. The look is capped off with revised front and rear bumper designs to help differentiate the three F-Type trims; R-Dynamic and R models feature J-shaped aero-blades to guide airflow around the front of the car. Thankfully, the rear haunches haven't been touched and look as muscular for 2021 as they did when the F-Type debuted in 2014.

Inside, the F-Type doesn't change much, which is a good thing. The main upgrade is to the technology with a 12.3-inch reconfigurable digital gauge cluster in front of the driver replacing analog gauges, while the 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus over-the-air software update functionality. The round knobs for the climate controls, center console-mounted volume knob, and joystick-like gear selector all carry over for 2021.

An emphasis has been put on the materials and details inside the 2021 F-Type's cabin with Windsor leather, suede, Noble chrome, and monogram stitching on the seats and door trim. In a nod to the brand's past, "Jaguar" is stamped into the seat belt guides and glovebox release.

Base F-Types will are still powered by a 296-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-4 with 295 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 continues with 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. The most powerful F-Type, the R, is still powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8, but output increases from 550 to to 575 hp and from 502 to 516 lb-ft of torque. The only way to get a rear-wheel-drive F-Type is to opt for the turbo-4 as both the V-6 and V-8 send power to all four wheels. All F-Types continue with an 8-speed automatic transmission (RIP 6-speed manual, a short-lived option that died for 2020).

No 2021 F-Type is slow. The base 4-cylinder model sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds on the way to a top speed of 155 mph. The voracious V-8 drops the 0 to 60 mph time to 3.5 seconds and ups the top speed to an electronically-limited 186 mph.

The F-Type retains its aluminum double wishbone front and rear suspension, but the rear knuckles are now aluminum die castings matched with larger wheel bearings and new upper ball joints. According to Jaguar, the changes provide more precise control of the tire's contact patch for better steering feel.

To increase grip, the R model gets 10-mm wider Pirelli P Zero tires all around. It now has 265/35ZR20s up front and 305/30ZR20s at the rear. tires are 10mm wider than before on R models to provide increased grip.

The electric power steering system has been recalibrated for more immediate response. We'll have to wait until we have some time behind the wheel to judge if the new calibration is actually an improvement over the previous setup.

Pricing and U.S. availability for the 2021 Jaguar F-Type will be announced early in 2020.

The ZF8 is quickly becoming one of the best transmissions out there, if it isn't already. Low failure rates, almost bulletproof, and considering it's modularity for different manufacturers needs - says volumes.

It's a different type of engagement, yes. I will always bow to that... but it's still engagement. If the goals are exactly the same, including the results, with just 2 different ways to get there, what's the downside?

I have always loved the F type. The type S was a fairly fun car, sounded amazing but damn did it feel heavy and had some cheap’ish interior. The F type R is a god damn beast though. Still a little heavy on handling, slightly better seats but god damn violent on acceleration and the sound, god it sounded amazing.

I would say this is one of the best “gentleman’s” car for cruising and semi spirited driving. For a more aggressive driver oriented performance car, there are better options IMO for less dollar.
