Most internet forum discussions turn into debates ripe with snide remarks and attempts to one-up other people. It doesn't matter if it's a science forum on NPR.org or the comments beneath some idiotic YouTube video. It's just the nature of any online environment that throws together people of all ages, backgrounds, and intelligence levels.

I have a couple pieces of advice, because if you've only been here a short time and this is how you feel then you must be fairly new to internet forums:
1) make ample use of the search feature, don't just assume because something isn't on the first page of results that it doesn't exist. This forum is VERY active and topics get pushed quicker than people think because the big topics are always on the first page and that makes it look like nothing new is posted. 2) don't be confrontational. It is pretty simple, talk to people how you would talk to them in real life. Or if you're a dick in real life, then talk to them how you would talk to your mom. If you are a douche to your mom, then talk to them how you think a priest would talk to you. That's all I got, if you think a priest would insult, berate and belittle you...then just don't post. 3) be clear, concise and ask your questions in a way that makes it easy to understand what you are looking for. As a secondary thing, don't ask questions people can't answer (read Unibombers manifesto and other similar FAQs). I've been posting here for a couple months during my purchasing process, but I'd lurked here for quite a while longer and I have had zero problems with people "ripping my head off". I guess I'm also very experienced with internet forums (I'm active on several games and golf/disc golf forums) so I know how to deal with trolls and inflated egos. I guess what I'm saying is that how you act and what you say determines how people respond to you. If you don't read the stickied threads and do stupid things, expect to get your head ripped off. There is less of a buffer on the internet than in real life, people aren't afraid to tell you what they think... |

There is a bad attitude on this forum, and the mods don't help.
*edit* Also you guys say not to take it personally - but everyone on here acts like it's a personal insult to them to do something to your own car that they don't agree with. Don't take it personally guys. |

General is well know for lackluster commentors trying to score interweb points by harraging newcomers with legitimate questions. Try posting in the off topic forum instead.

I find you'll actually get your questions answered sooner if you search yourself. Seriously, I make threads here and there, but never get a straight answer or have to wait days and days for replies.

Something else I do, frequently, is leverage Google to search NASIOC. Just a personal preference/different route to take and saves some NASIOC server resources to boot.

We used to have a nice, tight knit community, but then then Subaru released the WRX.

I've posted a couple of times without any hassle...yet, but I usually just browse around when im bored or need ideas. Some of the topics I WANT to read into usually turn into a s***fest, SERIOUSLY its NOT that hard to find the back button at the top left hand corner of your screen if you don't like or have a legit answer then just simply go back, but I guess that's what e-thugs do. I am somewhat new to forums and don't mean to cause anything or seem like someone got me all butthurt over something. Its just some of you make me sit back and just think to myself WOW. Thanks for the tips and whatnot some of you have given me to prevent one of these episodes. I do appreciate it! I hope I can help some of you on here, like some of you have just helped me... without the lashings hahaha

You want to see the difference it makes between whether you are a girl or a guy posting check out this thread from the newbies today:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2415366 3 pages and no flaming! Just information and flattery. Wow I think if we were smart we'd all pose as chicks to get our questions answered. |

you have to realize the size of this forum is HUGE! i remember one time reading it was one of the top 20 most trafficked websites in the entire interwebs, and i imagine it to still be up there! its not a small tight-knit group of friends. your diving into the masses, and you got to fight for yourself.
while a lot of times the regulars, myself included, do get a lil harsh with the newbies, you got to remember a couple things. 1. its all in good fun, nobody is serious in wanting to make you feel like **** 2. its the internet. more or less anything goes, and thats how it works. its just like xbox live is full of pre-teens playing call of duty all day **** talking. its just how it goes. 3. this analogy will probably be lost because noboy goes to the library anymore these days, but when you go to a library do you even bother to pick up a book and read it first before asking someone to tell you whats inside? hell do you even attempt to look up the subject you want to learn an find it yourself with the system thats in place? or do you just make whoever is working there o it for you because you are too lazy? when you want to put something together do you follow the provied instructions or do you just bitch and demand someone else put it together for you? what i am trying to say is so many people dont take the 30 seconds to use the "search" button first. so many of the questions are LITERALLY asked every single day, when the answers are right on the front page of the sub-forum usually in a sticky. made convenient for anyone to see, right in your face, and people still dont bother to read them. i understand if you ont have time to read every post of every thread of the topic your into, but do you even try first? usually the answer is no, its pretty obvious and it shows you didnt even try, and you get treated as such. /rant |

But in all seriousness... i have been lurking on nasioc for over 2 years before making an account and posting. I get both sides here ... sometimes the questions are downright stupid, written in a language not know to man,or could have been solved easily by using the search. However ... there are times that a flamewar starts for no reason at all or that someone had a bad day and the first question thats not 100% new or thought through is enough to start the ****storm. Bu yeah from what i see, yes it could do with a little more friendliness overall. But i get either points of view. EDIT : Yeah pretty much what 07VTREX said. |
