MIDI to MP3 Converter. Know of any?
I've googlized as much as I can but I cannot find a program to convert midi sound files into mp3 files. I have found one or two that convert half the song but I'd really liek the whole thing to be converted. Unless someone else knows how to put and be able to play midi files on an iPod I really need this software. By the way, I'm looking for a free program.

midi doesn't actually contain sound but note data. It tells a synth or drum machine what notes to play and when.

So you must use a midi-to-wave program and then encode the WAV file in mp3.

I think WinAmp 5 will do it, but I can't get it to work. Preferences->Output to Nullsoft Disk Writer, Preferences->Input->Nullsoft MIDI Player->turn sampling on. Generates a WAV file, but it seems to be empty.
I'd try to help more, but I have the attention span of a three year old. |

Easy peasey, but it's a two step process.
Load up your favorite audio recorder program and your favorite midi player (or rack of midi synths and samplers, whatever). Load up the biggest baddest soundfont you can if your sound card allows... Set your sound card and audio recorder program so it will record the output of the midi source. Hit record in the recorder, hit play on the midi player, and wait for it to get to the end. Edit out the silence at the start and the end and save as a wave file. Optionally, you may be able to save as an MP3 from within the audio recorder. Second step is to run the wave file through an MP3 encoder. I like winlame. Maybe you like something else. |

Midi contains 0 sound data. A midi file simply tells your soundcard (which contains a general Midi set of 127 instruments) what notes to play and when. Just to clear up the technical side of things.
