^^ If so, you'll want to consider a WRX rear diff.

You can use the RS tranny/diff. Upgrade the clutch(RS..I have Exedy) and swap the flywheels(the RS fits the WRX).

ver 7 swap is a GREAT option for you as you have an 02, another route would be to get different block and heads and just keep your intake manifold and wiring complete, for example you can get a ej20g block for relatively cheap.

I remember this one time my dad asked a mechanic at Sears ('twas convenient) to check the lube in the "pumpkin". This mechanic started to pop the hood and I thought my dad was gonna break his fingers.......

What does this have to do with the thread topic? Your answer has absolutely nothing to do with his problem......The problem is at the other end of the car......

Find out what the final drive is and then replace the diff with the correct one. IIRC the 02 RS came with an open diff once again but I'm not 100 percent sure on that. If that's the case and it's still 4.11 like the earlier RS' pick up a diff from an 00 or 01 RS and you'll be happy as a clam.

The ratios appear fine, its the physical interface that you need to confirm. This would be the attachment of the axle half-shafts to the diff. (length; innie or outie) and the flange that attatches to the drive shaft. The flange should be fine but I mention it because STI diffs have a different flange bolt pattern, so there have been known mis-matches. If the axles don't fit you could check the rear axles from a WRX sedan to see if those work as substitutes.

Btw: have you drained the rear diff & looked inside w/ a flashlight? You may want to confirm that this is the problem before you go about doing repairs that may be costly, time consuming, and much ado about nothing.

Check rear hub bearings and axles too as nudging a curb in the snow and the salt roads could take a toll. Those other components will whine proportionally w/ increased speed also.

3.90 front 3.54 rear

I lift the car.. and roll the car on the lift.. and the noise was from the rear differential.. there was no play on the universal joint.. I checked the gear oil.. and it was dirty as Hell.. but I changed the oil like 10,000 miles ago.. so I figure the differential. was shot.. well my warranty company will pay for the diff. I just wanted to know few things.. before I order another diff.. since 00-01 came with LSD maybe I could try to fit it in.. so I could have better control in the snow and and rain.. if its too much hassle to change all that I rather stick with the 03 Rear diff.. well thank you for you help.. everyone..

Did you by any chance check your wheel bearings? It could be a wheel bearing.

an earlier model diff will be less costly if your coverage allows you to pick up used. Axles will need to be checked to see if they fit.

Of course, if the noise turns out to be a bearing in the hub, replacing the bearing would be much cheaper.

Maybe you could try flushing out the rear diff w/ gear oil first. Drain, Jack up the rear, overfill the diff, plug, drive around, drain. (cheap) The noise should change if its coming from the rear diff.
