Default DE citizens I need your help. I need a temp tag to drive car back to IL. HELP!

Delaware is officially the most difficult state in the United States. Here's the situation.

1) I'm an Illinois resident and it looks like I'm going to purchase a WRX that's titled in Delaware.
2) I would fly in on a Saturday.
3) I would need to get a 5 day temporary tag to drive back to Illinois.
4) ALL DMV's in Delaware are closed on the weekends.
5) According to some woman in the DMV who was just too friendly ( ), there are no currency exchanges or any other type of facility in Delaware that I can get a temp tag from.

Does anyone have ANY suggestions for me? I'm open to pretty much anything. I would really prefer to avoid flying in a weekday simply because of missing work. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd say "borrow the car from the seller"

Leave him a deposit.

Drive the car home...

mail him tags... he mails you title. keeps your money...

get tags in your state.

I stayed at a holiday inn express last night.

Or just fly out, pick it up and drive it back.
If you get pulled over, show them the bill of sale with its very recent date and be let off.

In CO a bill of sale works for something like 5 days in person-to-person sales.

I plan on driving the car back. I'm not sure if the current owner would be too keen on me driving back to Illinois with his plates. His bank currently holds the title so I won't be getting the title when I purchase the car.

I guess my two choices are:
1) Fly in on a weekday and go to a DE DMV.
2) See if the current owner will let me drive back with his plates.

Thanks for the responses!

Why do you say that? Are plates tied to the car in Delaware? Plates in Illinois are not tied to the vehicle so that's why I wouldn't expect him to give me his.

I always just took one of my car's plates and put them on to drive home. Do the speed limit and don't drive like an ass and you should be fine?

I don't plan on speeding, I want to enjoy the trip. I'm just hearing conflicting stories from 3 different state DMV's and wanted clarification.

I live in DE, and I bought my car in NY. Before I drove up to pick up the car, I went to the DE DMV, and they issued me temporary tags to drive the car back.

Maybe you should check with your state's DMV before flying out.

I did. They won't give me a temp tag because it's titled in Delaware.

This is Virginia's cool "Trip Pertmit" system: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/dmvnet/...rmit/intro.asp

Illinois doesn't have something similar?

His bank holds the title. There's still a lien on the car.

Nope. The Illinois DMV is absolutely worthless!

I spoke to the owner and he has no issues with letting me use his plates.

Thanks for all the responses!
