Exclamation Ok, put on your "serious faces", OT. I need your help/advice. Seriously. For real.

I'll make this as short and sweet as possible.

BACKGROUND
I drive an '04 WRX that will be paid off in January. I had planned on holding onto it for a long time and enjoying no car payment.
Wife drives a leased G35x; lease ends in December.
We have an infant, and expect to have another within 2-3 years.

ISSUE
We need to get a new car in December for my wife. We have a fundamental disagreement on how to go about it. If I had my way, she'd get something that would fit our needs for many years to come (i.e., a minivan), I would keep my WRX, and we would enjoy only 1 car payment for several years to come.

She doesn't want to get a minivan yet (apparently it's too "mommyish" for a 32 year old woman with a kid), and thinks we should get her a sedan which she would use for a couple years (until we have a 2nd kid), and then pass it along to me, at which point I would get rid of the WRX and she would get a minivan. Her reasoning is that we need enough hauling power to move around 4 adults, 2 kids, and cargo; in the event that we get a sedan/small SUV, that only provides enough room for 2 adults and 2 kids + cargo, and that my WRX isn't comfortable/accomodating enough for the remaining adults. You know, in case we're cheuferring around out of town famility or friends.

SOLUTION
Rather than trying to reason or use logic with a woman, I'm going to try to find a vehicle that the wife could get in December, that she would enjoy driving now, but would suit our needs for many years. And this is where you come in.

Recommend a vehicle that...
• would provide room for at least 3 adults + 2 kids (in car seats) plus cargo.
• is safe
• is "sexier" than a typical minivan
• is reasonable economical--no large SUVs (Expedition or larger) will be considered

When providing ideas, rationale for your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think her plan makes more sense, actually.

Do you really want to own a 10 year old WRX?

volvo xc70 - details coming

it was actually at 540miles and i kept track for the next 150 miles or so to make sure it was accurate. We got about 34mpg on the highway. we bought it used in 2005 (or 6) with 15k miles on it for $26k

1. Its silent inside
2. Good gas milage
3. Safe
4. Higher off the ground than a car but lower than an SUV which is nice to put a kid in a car seat
5. Very comfortable
6. Reliable (have had no issues other than scheduled maintenance which can be high)
7. Sexy
8. AWD
9. Plenty of cargo space for luggage and kid gear

We're in a similar situation, except the wife won't tolerate sedans. We're thinking slightly used Murano or Outlook/Acadia/Traverse. You know, versatile with relatively ok mileage.

Sounds like a Mazda5 would be good for your needs, though. Seating for up to 6 and plenty of storage with the rear seats folded.

LGT Wagon FTW.

CX-7 FTL. Nice cartruck, but bad mileage and a crappy tranny.

The new Highlanders are nice and have seating for 7. My mom has one and there's so much more leg room for the backseat passengers than my Forester. I might have to take a look at the new Foresters, though, but I know for a fact if you're using a car seat with the latch base system, them the person in the front seat would have their knees to the dash in an '08 or previous Forester. I vote for Highlander.

Not likely; they just came out.

This is the key question. It doesn't make sense to drive a vehicle that's bigger than you need 99% of the time. If you do have "out of town family or friends," just take both cars.

LGT Wagon FTW.
This would be my top choice.
