Default Picking up my 2005 Legacy GT Limited Next Week!

Hey guys, as the title states, I am picking up my Subbie either Monday or Tuesday of next week, and I am very excited! Its my first Subaru and I have been in the car scene for a while, but am not terribly familiar with these cars. The cars I know most of and have worked on are my old Grand Prix GTP (supercharged), friends S13 240sx(we did an SR20DET swap), friends 1994 Camaro SS (helped him do clutch, headers, intake, chip, etc, and a friends Saturn Ion Redline ( ended up rebuilding the motor with him, he blew a piston) So theres a little of my mechanic background, I am also located in Wappingers Falls NY, I know theres a lot of Subbie guys around here, I am hoping to join your meets on Fridays!!

The big things I have been wondering is what is the difference between the Legacy GT and the STI, I know they both have the 2.5L but what are the main differences/similarities? What mods are compatible between the Legacy GT and the WRX/STI? Also I have the mod bug, but don't want to dump a lot into mods, I want to keep it mostly stock, just do the beginning basic mods to keep me happy. So what would you recommend? I was thinking for now Hogzaust until I get funds for an actual exhaust, CAI, Up-pipe, BOV. I know this sounds like a ricerish mod list, I can promise you I am far from that, just trying to feed my need to mod in an inexpensive way! What would you recommend for the things I mentioned? I know its a million questions, feel free to just throw links at me and tell me to read, and I am also awaiting my, **** NOOB SEARCH response

It's more directed at imprezas but I'm sure most information is universal. Read all of that and you will figure out which direction to go. Before you do anything make sure to decide on a form of tuning though, you will need it for most of the mods you do.

Awesome! Thats exactly what I wanted, thanks a lot man. I have lots of reading ahead of me before I actually do anything. However, I guess I will ask a question which has probably been asked 23019312030 million times, what are the mods I can do without tuning? I know Cobb Accesport is the popular tuning system, but I am going to look for other alternatives, I would assume there are the accessport is just what I always hear of.

The accessport is quick easy and highly marketed. It's great, but going to a tuner is better and more cost effective...sort of. Search the manifesto, there is a list of things you can do without tuning. Don't take my word exactly and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but some things you can do without tuning are: up pipe, cat back exhaust, intake filter (k&n drop in or equivalent), some intakes like k&n with the same diameter maf hose, new intercooler, intercooler hoses (don't know if that's a legacy mod), short shifter, anything suspension related, gauges, and I think that might be it for performance mods.

Thanks, these write ups are great! Thank god school just ended this week and my girlfriend is away for the weekend so I can really go crazy with my reading. Do you know if you need tuning for a BOV? Also, I have heard from various people that BOV's create boost creap, is that true? Would a 50/50 diverter valve or something similar be better? I don't want crazy loud, just a little more than stock, I loved the Blitz BOV my friend had his 240sx, and can't stand the Greddy Type S or the RFL or similar things, just to give you a sample of my taste. So far the initial list for me in my quick 10 minute preliminary reading looks like my first items will be 1) Intercooler hoses 2) K&N typhoon intake ( would rather not go with a knock off because of the MAF issue?) 3) catted up-pipe due to NYS inspection, however will further research if a catted up-pipe is even worth it 4) eventually BOV or Diverter valve 5) Exhaust 6) Engine Management 7) Leave be (power wise) and DD for another 150k Miles!!

Oh yeah, bov too, you don't need to tune for that. A bov is a bov, the problem is aftermarket ones usually leak. A 50/50 from what I have heard is just slightly quieter. The only problem (aside from leaking) is a split second rich condition in the motor that happens with a 50/50 for a full vent to atmosphere bov. If you want one get one, but it's all for noise. Most people just suggest getting something more important instead. Not sure if I ever heard of them causing a boost creep, but they don't seal as good as the factory one so they might leak. I'd read up on it, but some of the better name brands aren't as prone to leaking (and that is better name brands, not known name brands, I don't have experience with any but some more popular brands still suck).

Yeah, I was familiar with the fact that it is more rich, boost creep doesn't make sense to me from what I understand, but thats just what I heard... I would assume a 50/50 diverter valve would help with the running rich problem, because instead of 100% of the air being put into the atmosphere and 0% recirculating, now its 50% into atmosphere and 50% recirculating, therefore wouldn't run quite as rich?

It doesn't really matter that much. It's not that big of a deal, if you are really worried about that split second rich condition while shifting then don't buy a BOV, a 50/50 won't cure the problem, just give you a quieter valve. There's a thread out there titled "the real dirt on bov's" or something I'll try and find it, it gives a better view of them.
