2000 2.5 rs rear lsd into 97 impreza abs?s
I was wondering if I I could swap the rear lsd out of a 2000 rs into my 97 impreza and still keep the abs working. I know it will bolt in and that I need to use the 2000 rs axles also, but I think the abs sensor is mounted differently on them. Can it be made to work and if so how. Also I assume this answer would apply to swapping the rs rear lsd into any legacy or impreza pre 98 or 99 because I think thats when they changed the abs mount or sensor design.
Thanks in advance

you DON'T have to use 2.5RS axles for the diff swap. The inner stubs are the SAME. This applies to all the newer R160 rear diffs like from '97+. The ABS trigger in the rear has ALWAYS been on the hub. It changed in the front... from HUB to axle trigger.
I've put a VLSD into my '99. I've put it on a '98 RS.....NO issues. |

Really I thought the axles used with the lsd has one side longer then the other one and I thought Ive seen a picture where even the stubs were different. If this isn't the case it should make things alot easier. Didn't they switch the tone ring from the hub to the axle on some of imprezas? Sorry if my info is wrong, just want to make sure I buy parts only once. I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm talking about usdm imprezas

Thanks fuji K. Great so its a direct bolt in. Was gonna try and make a 4.11 clutch type lsd. But this seems to be way cheaper. How well do the vsld compare to the old clutch type from a gl 10. Will a vsld with 100,000 miles or more be wore out and if so can you rebuild them like the old clutch types?

The VLSD is no where near as good as a clutch type. I would save for a KAAZ unit, which is around $1000 and it'll bolt on to the newer 97+ R160's and you can use your stock axles 97+ with the newer diff.
This is the different diff style, The year on there is wrong for one... but you'll know which one you have by looking at yours |

So I could find a r160 lsd from a 2003 wrx since it will have less miles(then a 2000 rs lsd) and use it with my stock axles and use that until i can get a clutch type. Was 2003 the last year for the r160 that will bolt up? Also whats the usual mileage that vlsd are worn out by. I know they become less and less of a lsd as they wear. Can they be rebuilt like mechanical ones.
thanks for all the help Fuji K |
