Eh, then they'd still be wrong. You want tires that are narrower, not taller.

My understanding is that you want narrower and taller. Narrower to cut through the snow and slush, and taller to give your wheels a little more protection (against potholes and curbs that you may not see as well in bad weather).

Got me there, doesn't help with traction which would be my main concern. Protecting a wheel is just a bonus.

The roads are not very icy. It usually stays below freezing so very little melting and freezing. Roads are generally snow covered or partially covered.

Maybe I will skip the studs.

Ski season is almost here!

Hankook I Pikes any good for snow covered roads?

for the OP, just get Dunlop wintersport 3D put on your wheels,

they are a great HP winter tire. they are not "mushy" if temps are up into the spring , and even summer season.

if you have 8+ inches of unplowed snow, nothing will help you get home.

+1 on the dunlop I have had all others but they don't compare to the dunlop great traction in New England winters and they aren't super soft like witerforce

Thank you captain obvious, but still has nothing to do with my original statement. They didn't mention going to a narrower tire, they just mentioned a taller one. I'm the one who mentioned that ideally you want a narrower tire, it needing to being taller as a result is inconsequential to the original statement.

Time to put your E-penis away, no one wants to look at it.

I got a link from a local newspaper in quebec ( sorry it's in French) and they evaluate the 15 best snow tire for the region. Mostly cold, lot of black ice and ton of snow.

http://auto.lapresse.ca/conseils/201...hiver-2013.php

They found the nokian Hakka 7 to be the best, followed by the x-ice 3 and the blizzak ws70.

This is for winter 2013, article went online yesterday

this is the best place for you and this question because the TECHNICAL forums that actually deal with this kind of thing are just WAY too complicated

I just added him to my ignore list. Though in hindsight I do find him humorous so maybe down the road I'll take him off it. Ok, probably not.

Go to tirerack.com, enter your vehicle, pick each tire and look at the survey. There are ratings for different conditions.

If you plan on driving like a nut, you might want to look at performance winter tires. You only need studs if there is always snow on the road. They are dangerous on pavement and the **** it all up.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but you can buy tires mounted on steel wheels so you can just swap them, and you don;t have to take them somewhere to get mounted.

Mandatory yes, our winter is humid and very cold. Winter tire are a must. In the USA, I suppose it vary by region, so choose accordingly. Performance, snow, dry, slush, icy, noise. Pick the one that best fit your need and be happy.

The law is useful, a lot less accident, and less injury. Great law for our winter.

I have Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds and like them a lot, Michigan winters get pretty nasty.

I have used the Michelin X-ice, Peirelli winter carving, Firestone winter force ( only liked for deep snow, not on ice ), and Bridgestone blizzak 3 different models of these. all good tires and great in the winter my next set will be which ever is cheapest of them except the winter forces. Too much ice around here. Or maybe some Nokian Hakkapilettas if the price is right
