Default replacing engine help

So my buddy has a 04 wrx. Long story short, car started acting REALLY bad. Dealer said it's a bad rod bearing, or something like that. But they said it'll be like 5k to replace the engine.
I'm not sure if he would be getting a new engine, or just the long block, or what. Can anyone help me in what parts would be getting fixed? And could we see this as a opp to upgrade his engine and get better parts?
P.S. I'm a 07 Outback N/A guy, so be nice to me. This turbo stuff is new to me

if you look around the vendor forums you can find sti motors or even wrx shortblocks for way less than what dealers are asking.

i would just go out and get a ej257block brandnew can be found for 1600 + ship. used for 800+ship. than get your ecu tuned to the new displacemnet/compression. unless he wants to spend some bux on an sti swap. theres a guy in houston selling a V8 ej207 swap. i think its only missing brakes for 6800.

-just in case you dont know V8 EJ207 is tthe jdm Twinscroll sti engine with 6speed tranny

Last I checked the new short blocks were going for about $1800 but many find that the best route especially if they can do the install work themselves.
