Wedge something in there to test it out first. You have to see what will stop it before coming up with a solution. I think most of the noises can be fixed by adding some thin foam tape to the bottom section of the a-pillar. Taking off the tweeter mesh grill would make it easier to put the padding in.
Again, first see if that's the problem.

AAHHH!! These dash rattles are driving me nuts! They take away so much from an other-wise decent quality interior. I tend to be a perfectionist and things like these dash rattles really get to me. They seem to get worse and multiply every damn day. Granted they are intermittent most of the time, but with today being cooler than recent days (under 60 degrees), they were all buzzing at the same friggin time. I can't even imagine what the interior is going to sound like during the winter months. I have definitely pin-pointed two of the rattles as being the two A-pillars near the tweeters grills. The loudest, most annoying and most frequent rattle is somewhere inside the center of the dash. I could probably deal with the few other quieter, less frequent rattles if I could just figure out what the big one is. I don't feel like ripping my dash apart so maybe I'll just take it to the stealer and see what they say. I feel confident enough to take off the A-pillars and try some foam tape, but I'm not 100% sure what the pillars are rattling against. Anyway, sorry for the rant. I know the Impreza isn't a luxury vehicle by any means, but it's a brand new $20000+ car and the interior sounds cheaper than my buddy's 1996 Geo Metro.

I'll probably end up doing that and have them do the TSB for the steering column trim at the same time. Although, I'm not sure I completely trust the dealership to take the dash apart to fix a rattle without causing two more in it's place. I may attempt to take off the A pillar trim tomorrow, if it's not raining, and see if some foam tape quiets thing down. Just a little paranoid about breaking something in a brand new car.

i tried stuffing the a pillar from the outside with an old folded up parking permit (cardstock). we'll see how that performs. i also have the central dash rattle on occasion. i'm pretty sure it's the "lid" of the trip/clock/temp computer readout. not sure how to quell that play as i am not very interested in opening up the dash. as i've said before: intermittency is a mixed blessing: i'm glad that 3/4 of the time (just a rough guess) the car is dead silent...but when it's rattling like it can, it really drives me nuts as i don't think i've had a car rattle like this in many years (except for some of the crappy rentals i've had) |

Click here. Once you're at the site, click on the "Online Reference" link then choose "Technical Service Bulletin" under Publication Type. You'll then have to choose your model, year, etc. and click on the search button. The TSB for the steering column cover is about half way down the list.
You can't view the PDF file unless you have an account, but you can read the description. Last edited by jr0bb5; 06-06-2012 at 12:05 AM. |

Hi there - checking back in. Recall that I had tried two different methods of quieting the A-pillars on my March build Impreza (sport ltd). Passenger side I removed the grill (carefully used a flat bladed watch screwdriver and pried up about 1 inch inboard of the sides along the bottom to start the grill, then pried it the rest of the way out (gently!) with my hands). Anyway, for that side I folded felt padding and inserted/jammed it up under the "point" near the clip of the A-pillar cover - which seems to have done the job. The driver's side was more "quick and dirty" to see if this method would also work. There, I just jammed a felt pad between the windscreen and the top of the A-pillar cover. That too seems to have worked. I will probably move to duplicate the passenger side sometime soon since it is less obvious.
Still, good to know we have power over some of the obvious rattles/buzzes. The link below is an exact copy of the felt pads I am using. http://www.lowes.com/pd_54008-255-47...r|1&facetInfo= Hope that is helpful. I think I have heard the deep in the dash rattle but only a few times, so fingers crossed on that one for now. Over and out. Last edited by sager; 06-06-2012 at 10:22 AM. |

thanks for the check in, sager.
i definitely need to try this out: i squashed a piece of cardstock between the windshield and the a pillar and in my brief driving yesterday, the rattle was gone. but i think i need a longer term analysis to convince myself that it worked. however, i am glad to get your experience as it is a better looking solution. but i hope i understand you correctly. if i recall, when i did my tweeter upgrade, there is a "tooth" (white) with a notch that is part of the a pillar that comes down and meets the speaker grill panel. is that the "point" you wrapped or stuffed this felt pad under? i guess the idea here is to minimize motion of the a-pillar under rough roads/vibration. so whatever we try, it's to make it more rigid. i need to take a trip to home depot and/or lowe's this weekend to try something like this out. i hope this works as it will be one set of rattles i wont' have to deal with. is your other dash rattle coming from the center computer readout area (mpg/clock/temp). i think that lid over the top of that display can rattle and buzz. i wonder if there is an easy fix to remove the play in that lid. |

nubsub, I had that rattle near the head rest area. It made a 'tick 'tick noise when I went over any imperfection in the road. I noticed that when I drove with the car door not fully closed but latched (I don't suggest people to do so), the noise went away. To make the noise go away, I tweaked the upper door frame ever so slightly inwards and the noise went away (knock on wood). Don't know if that is the same noise as yours, but it sounds like it.

anyway, i did another experiment yesterday and i do think it's in the headrest itself or something in the seat...i had the seat tilted back (laying as flat as possible) and the sound moved to further away from me while driving, so i don't think mine is the door latch/lock. (but i'll keep that in mind) the next step will be to remove the headrest to see if it goes away. the problem (and again good thing, too) is that the problem is intermittent. it's only there when the car is cool. after being in the sun a little bit, it goes away... |

misery loves company. i am hoping this weekend to pursue the a-pillar rattles by opening up the speaker covers for the tweeters and putting some felt pads as suggested by others to try to make those a pillars more rigid. as i noted in my last post, i still need to experiment more on the whole headrest one...i think i'd feel some success to even find out where it was coming from so i can either give up or come up with a solution. that one near the knee airbag is still only occasional, but there has to be a fix that's easy since i can pinpoint it fairly well. i'm just very worried about dealing with an area near an airbag. |

I get some creak from the top panel where it meets the info display when it gets really warm. Looks like some foam tape or padding underneath will do the trick

I solved my hatch creak and rattle problems. I will start a new thread w pictures on how to do this.

i did a little work on rattles today:
i bought some felt circles (3/16" thick), cut them in half, stuck them together and wedged them under the A-pillar panel which i got access to by taking off the tweeter covers. interestingly, the driver's side one was the one with the most play initially, but the stacked pad made it very rigid and i'm pretty confident it won't rattle again. for the passenger side, which initially was tighter, it still had some play in the corner closest the passenger, so i wedged a thin strip of cardboard in there to lock it tight. the only problem is that the tweeter cover doesn't sit flush anymore...not a big deal if it gets rid of the sound, but we'll see how it goes in the coming week and if the sound is gone. i may still remove the cardboard to see if it's needed or to try something different as i would like to keep that part flush else that may be a new source of noise. as for my knee airbag piece, i strained my neck (literally -- it didn't feel very good) to look behind it using a headlamp. i can see why there is tons of play in that piece. i'm not sure that's the cause of my intermittent rattle, but i stuck another felt pad in there to remove one direction of motion that was easy to do. interestingly enough, there was already one tiny piece of foam tape there to apparently protect against a rattle from that area. my gut hunch though is that my creaking/rattle is coming from somewhere higher up and not accessible to my hand... but we'll see. there is a lot of room for experimentation here. i still haven't tried removing my headrest from the passenger side to see if i can isolate it to that part, but i do feel good that i actually took some steps today to maybe improve the rattling situation. i probably should get the steering column plastic fixed by the dealer at some point although i'm not in a hurry as i don't have a rattle there. finally, i put some pressure on the top panel of the info display. it sounds like there is actually some sort of foam tape under there already, but not enough? it's not clear that there is any easy way to remove that unless there are some clips that one would need to carefully pry up on. |
