Default car hesitates and jerks while holding speed

Hello all! has anyone experienced the same issue, where if you going slow in traffic, and usually trying to hold spees at 1800 to 2500 rpm, the car would jerk and hesitate, kinda like not catching the clutch on first gear. This happens with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear and is usually around 1800 to 2500 rpm, more noticable at 2100rpm trying to hold speeds there. thanks.

In first gear, yes. Less so in 2nd and up. My car probably does it even worse than yours since I have more mechanical parts in my transmission/diffs. If I'm in heavy traffic, I usually try to stay in second gear, as it's less jerky.

Third and fourth gears shouldn't be jerky like first and second while driving at a steady speed.

Yeah I caught that in my 50 year old brain after posting. Hey it happens.
As for OP's question, I agree with your comments Gallo. He probably has some habits from driving a NA car (like I did). Our cars really hate to lug and it's better to catch a lower gear and rev higher.

I'm right behind you, man. 50's just a little more than a year away for me. AARP, here we come!

The only time my car acts like a spoiled child is in stop-and-go traffic, which there is a lot of in So Cal. Many times I'll accelerate to 3 or 4 miles-per-hour and just throw it in neutral to coast rather than try to feather the throttle in 1st and end up bucking like a mechanical bull.

AARP just sent me a fricken card yesterday! I 86'd it.

I left all that city driving behind. I live out in the sticks and drive to work 28 miles away. Pass maybe two cars in the morning. I do have have a washboard county road for a couple of miles which always has me shuffling between 1st and 2nd gear. 2nd is mechanically smoother but if the road is trashed like lately then it's hard on both the car and my back. Sometimes driving a car with soooo much potential is frustrating unless you have a place to let it air out SAMMY HAGAR style.

Go ahead, rub your 28 miles of traffic-free driving in.

Pass two cars in the morning.

I see more cars in one morning than you see in a year!

Oh! And don't try to dodge the AARP. They are relentless! Just enjoy your senior-citizenship.

If the car is not tuned well, could be lean/rich conditions...

However, most likely just need to drop down a gear!

Sounds somewhat normal to me for those rpm ranges on a manual. Don't be afraid to stay between 2500-3500rpm on a daily basis. Imo if your under 2200rpm it's time to downshift.

Every now and then this happens to mine right in that rpm range. Most notably at 2000-2200 rpms. I notice my rpm fluctuates up and down real quickly as the car buckles like that. I was told from a few it's due to the bad stock tune these cars have.

I've always just considered this a "manual transmission thing". I had a 2008 Spec V (2.5L N/A) that acted the same as my WRX. My friend has a 2009 Si (2.0L N/A) and it does the same thing.

I'd recommend nothing but Chevron supreme. And don't be afraid to downshift. High load - low RPM = HORRIBLE for turbo car. (Flooring it in 5th going 30 for instance)

I came from a manual 2005 VW GTI (1.8T) and never felt this before like I do on the WRX. Who knows though, I personally couldn't find any good info on it when I tried to search about this last month.....only other WRX owners telling me it's from the poor stock tunes these newer models came with.........

You are feeling drivetrain lash.

It's because of two things:

1. Slack in the AWD drivetrain, from all the moving parts that have to work together to get power to all four wheels, which you will not be able to get rid of with any sane amount of money, and

2. Really really really soft drivetrain mounts that let everything move around.

One of the top three upgrades I recommend is a transmission mount, because the oem mount on the WRX is like a piece of bubblegum poked full of holes.

I have been driving a stick shift since 1987 and I must admit that my Impreza is the most difficult car I have ever driven in a traffic jam. This is my first AWD Subaru and I have had it for almost 4 years and it still consistently makes me look like a noob when it starts doing the "herky jerk". I commute about 70 miles a day to work and back and spend about 20-30 mins a day in grid lock. I think my next Subaru will be a CVT as my daily commute is getting worse every year and my left leg is not getting any younger

I love that someone else besides myself calls it the "herky jerk"
