Detroit Axle says that their rebuilds are only for WRX non-turbo and non-STi Imprezas. I double checked the parts and the STi does have a different part number...

2008-2014
34110FG031 is for the STi
34110FG021 is for the WRX base

2015
34110VA010 is for the WRX and WRX STi
34110FJ230 is for the impreza

I might have ordered the one for the non turbo. Idk. The 2.5i and the wrx have the same rack. I have a 2010 wrx.

Default 2011 WRX power steering leak at pinion valve

I have a 2011 WRX sedan- all stock suspension components, 62,xxx miles.

I noticed a leaking fluid one day and removed my bottom plastic cover and looked under my car. It appeared to be coming from a metal line that went into the steering rack (drivers side area). Upon further review, it was coming from slightly above the metal line, its part of the steering rack, and is called the pinion valve.

I read all sorts of info/threads about this issue online. Apparently new and older Subarus experience failure on this same spot anywhere after 5k to 70k. Most people say Subaru quoted them $1000- $1400 to replace the entire steering rack as they will not service the pinion valve. Others have been lucky enough to have it warrantied (even if they did not have any warranty or extended warranty on their car)

I went to Subaru, told them what I had found online and that I want it warrantied. They agreed it was an issue with the part, they contacted Subaru of America, and they charged me a $100 deductible since I was far out of warranty. A fare price as I was expecting the worse!! Got my new steering rack on and hope it lasts for awhile!!

Yeah that's not a bad deal at all. I paid $200 for a rebuilt rack. Buuuut I do have a lifetime warranty so I'll never have to buy another one.

Noticed that mine is leaking at the power vale as well. Also noticing the clutch/brake pedal queak, so maybe just maybe they can replace it all for a small fee. Gonna call SoA soon and see what they say.

So I called SoA today and spoke with a rep and they basically said Im S.O.L. on my rack leaking. They said that all they could do to help me was start a ticket on my clutch pedal spot welds and help me set a time for me to travel 100 or so miles to get it looked at and still not guarantee that it gets taken care of without it costing me anything. So looks like Ill be buying a rack and replacing it myself, and try to find a day or two to go to Dallas/Fort Worth to have it looked at for my pedal.

"Subaru stands behind their cars." Hahahah. My power steering rack went bad before 60,000 miles and 6 years. Because my car warranty expired, I was SOL. Good luck on your clutch pedal spot welds because I was SOL too.

it looks like I will be adding my car to the steering components problems list. At cold start up my belt screams like a *****, and the steering wheel is hard to turn. i'm taking my car in tomorrow to dealership. Lets see what non sense they can come up with.

Just curious, if you have a write up or any pictures from your project. I believe my fittings are leaking on the return line to the P/S pump. Did you have to bleed the lines and replace fluid?

135K and mine went too, testing how quick it's losing fluid at the moment. Dealer told me that they don't rebuild them and I'm in for $1500. Educating myself at the moment reading all the threads about it, definitely wanting to do it myself. Since it's pissing out of the top of the control valve, probably will just replace it, $300 is better than $1200. Maybe I'll give Subaru a shout and complain too, problem came out of nowhere with a car that has been treated and serviced well and garage kept for its whole life.

Default 2011 Imreza WRX hatch data point

Power Steering rack data point:

Last year my 2011 Impreza WRX hatch was diagnosed with a power steering leak. This year it failed inspection.

I have fairly low miles 78K, which I raised that point to SOA. I wasn't happy at the prospect of shelling out ~$1200 for the cost of the repair (include alignment, steering rack, labor).

SOA reminded me that I didn't have their extended warranty, but out of goodwill offered to cover 50% of the repair (apparently not including the alignment). While it's still a bunch of $ to get my WRX fixed / inspected, I'm glad Subaru stood by their product. The check is in the mail.

I'm still considering moving to a different, newer Subaru (possibly forester).

My pump has been slowly leaking at the line in for a few years now, but it only seems to whine when the weather gets cold and the car is cold. Already replaced the O-ring but that didn't fix it. Finally going to get around to putting a new pump in since it's getting more whiny than normal.....140k of hard driving, autocross, etc....

Don't see any evidence that the rack is leaking though

Looks like my 2015 WRX STI might have the rack leak too. 46k miles, no AutoX, mostly highway miles. It started whining night before last, and today was pretty bad. Fluid was low, so I got some more, but it didn't completely fix the problem. I removed the splash guard and it was full of fluid, with drips on the brace under the rack. I can't quite see the parts where it's leaking from though. Anyone have links for replacement tips? Also, the only parts I can find for 2015 are about $350. I'm going to call the dealer but unfortunately, I'm out of warranty and I didn't get the extended warranty. I am amazed something like this could go bad so soon though...

Just noticed mine is leaking too at the pinion valve. I am like 20k miles under the end of my extended warranty, but just under a month past the 5 years (2011 STi I bought new).

Anyone have any luck getting a goodwill replacement just a month past he extended warranty?

I had the 7yr/70k extended warranty for my 2009 wrx, which is now at 80k miles and of course out of the 70k maximum.

Not too long ago I had the spot weld issue, which I was told by the dealership I was SOL since my warranty had expired. I called SOA and they covered it 100%. The dealership said "why would you call them it's not under warranty"..

A few months ago my steering was squealing and I got it towed to a dealership.

They said they needed to replace my steering rack AND my steering pump despite what I was told at a local Subaru specialist I took it to first.

I ended up paying over $2,000 for the rack/pump so I just called SOA and complained about it since I did it at a dealership. I am hoping they cover at least part of it, if not I will complain more about it. They are "reviewing my case". I will keep you guys updated on my attempt out of warranty to get it covered!

2009 WRX 90,XXX miles here and I've noticed a leak going on for a while and suspected it was what you guys have had issues with.
Dealership told me I need a new PR rack/pump because of how long I've let it go and was quoted $2,300 including an allignment.

Fun times. Time to search for parts and figure out how to get them installed.

Hi folks, new guy here.
Auto-repair illiterate.

'08 WRX hatch ~76k miles - yes, I average less than 10k mi/year, mostly city driving.
No mods, no track days or autocross or anything like that.
I do occasionally drive fast around highway ramps but that's the closest I come to "abusing" my car.

Had the steering whine a couple of years ago, my independent mechanic bled the system and looked for leaks but found nothing, but the whine got better anyway.
This past fall the whine came back with a vengeance along with a slow ps fluid leak that hits the ground just inside of the front left tire.
Started researching on-line and followed the recommendation to replace the O-ring.
Noticed before replacement that the reservoir had foamy bubbles on top - after replacement, no more foam, whine is MUCH better but not completely gone and the leak didn't change - losing maybe a couple ounces a week.

Last week had my mechanic address the leak and they told me I need to have my PS rack replaced.
They quoted me ~$1k including alignment, which seems like a good deal compared to what others in this thread have reported, so that's good.

In my research on this issue, I see 3 approaches being recommended:
-replace rack w/ same part
-replace rack w/ '15+ rack
-repair pinion valve

I trust my mechanic/shop, they specialize in foreign sports cars but have mentioned once or twice that "Subarus are a p.i.t.a."

Just looking for a consensus on the best approach.
Direct replacement doesn't seem like a good idea if they're known to fail.
Not sure if my shop will be willing to replace w/ alternative part ('15+ rack) or attempt to repair the pinion valve, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.
Although, depending on who in the shop I talk to, I sometimes get attitude because of my ignorance - kind of like "mansplaining" except I'm not female.
And of course, any time I mention, "I read on the internet..." I get eye-rolls and heavy sighs.

Any advice would be much appreciated, keeping in mind that replacing that o-ring is about the limit of my d.i.y. ability.

Also, if anyone has a recommendation for a good Subie mechanic in the Waltham, MA area, I'm open to suggestions.

Oh yeah, I guess there is a 4th option - buying a rebuilt rack, but I'm not too keen on that and I know my shop is not interested in installing parts that they didn't source themselves.

13 wrx with 86k miles with the same exact issue. I bought the extended warranty when I first got the car. Subaru of San Bernardino were happy to replace it under warranty, along with a faulty driver side window. Lowered on coilovers and had a catback exhaust.
Hope others get lucky as few of us seen to have. ☺

Sorry to bump this thread. My 2011 WRX with 59000 miles without extended warranty is having the same problem. The dealership quoted me $1300 to replace the rack and pinion. I called SOA and the rep said they will contact the dealership and see what kind of solution they can provide. I'll update once I hear from them.
