Default 07, 08, or 09 WRX best for autocross?

I am looking to upgrade to a WRX from my 2002 SI. One of the biggest things I am going to love to od with my WRX will be Autocross. I started last year with my SI and I love it. Now I am hooked.

Right now I can not afford getting a 09 brand new. I might have to wait till the end of the model year with the 2010 come out. I can affored a 08 or 07. I know the 08 and 07 are different in the body.

Out of these 3 years is there a year that is better then the other for autocross? From searching I see there are a lot more aftermarket for the 07 but I know from my honda give the newer model 3 years and much more will be out.

I just do not want to be kicking my self because I found out I am getting my butt kicked on the track by anouther WRX because of something that was better in that year.

Thanks for any help. I am realy just starting to get more into looking for this WRX and I want to do my homework first.

I know a STI would be best but I just do not want to pay the cash or insurance.

The big question is what class do you want to be in?

A mid-mileage 04-05 STi would rock (closer to the price of a slightly used 07-08 WRX). The insurance (depends on underwriter) was the same for my 06 wagon as it is for my 05 STi.

Also, there are very few issues with the 04-05-06 STis

2009 hasn't been out long enough to get any data on it, so no way to say if it is better, or worse, than the 07 or 08. Like... there have been no national events that anyone can draw any useful '09 data from.

However, the '07/'08 don't fare well in autox right now. In stock, they can't get out of their own way vs other, better cars. If you're looking at an SCCA street class, you'd be in STU against STis and EVOs... again... a WRX isn't the 'choice' to have in that class.

It sounds like you are limited by budget, so... none of them. Really. Buy a cheaper car and play with that where you can afford to set it up for auto-x properly.

I am running STS with my honda right now now. I do it more for the love of pusing my car. I know I can not be fully compeative agaist the guy that trailer their cars in even in STS.

You say that as if they are the same car.

They both are equally bad on the course.

There are merits of the TD04 for autocross, the 08s biggest problem is it's suspension...

Can the 08 be fixed with and aftermarket upgrade? Or is it how the chaise is setup?

Like my SI with the MacPherson strut I am kind of stuck with how bad it is. I got D-spes on it to help but no matter what I can not get my car to handle as good as a older Honda with out turning it into a none daily driver.

How about an older 2.0 liter WRX (02-05)? They can be had for much less money and are still legal in STX, where they dominate the class.

If you're doing it more for fun rather than competition, then the pre-08's may be better due to the gigantic aftermarket parts availability. If you're in it to compete, unfortunately '06+ aren't classed that well. I would say an '02-'05 WRX may be the best bet and they are highly competitive in STX.

06/07's do rather well in ESP IF (big IF) they're prepped fully ($$$$$). On the same note, 02-05's can be competitive in ESP if you do engine swaps if you're really looking to spend money.

I'm not sure how 08/09's are classified yet, but if they're classified together, the 09's beat the 08's due to improved factory turbo and suspension.

IMO, keep what you have until you can afford what you want.

+1 for this.

But really we need to know what sort of money you'll be spending preparing the car once you buy it, and whether you care about being competitive in a class or you're just playing in autox for fun.

I drove an '08 last year and really liked it (maybe I'm biased), and I thought that would have been a solid D Stock car. Now with the suspension and power improvements of the '09, I think it could be very competitive, but also makes the '08 no longer an option for consideration.
