Question Any Industrial Engineers out there?

I am currently a junior in the Industrial and Systems Engineering program at VT and am looking for an internship for the summer. Anyone else work for an engineering firm or have any suggestions of someone to contact in MD/DC/NOVA?

Have you checked your campus career center? They should have a good line on coops/internships.

You can also try the student chapter of professional organizations like SME, ASME, etc.

I'm a ME, so not up on IE orgs.

Question

Yeah thanks, the school does have a lot of opportunities. I also wanted to hear from some people working in the industry. Any input (good or bad) would be appreciated.

I graduated from VT in ISE this past spring. It depends upon whether you want a true IE job or not. For example, I work for Goodyear in Danville. I don't work in a traditional ISE job. In fact, my job has more of a mechanical engineering background as a tire design engineer. I think you need to start looking for internships in industries you're interested in, not just by description. Obviously, by the end of your internship will help you decide if you're interested in a particular area. It just happens to make your internship more interesting if you're dealing with something you like.

Go to the engineering career fair this spring (I think it's in march). It's smaller than Expo but a lot of companies (most) come out looking for summer interns. That's probably the best opportunity outside of using the career website with VT.

my employer, volvo powertrain, in Hagerstown usually has interns and co-ops. If you'd be interested in something in that area I can give you the email of a good person in HR to ask if anything will be coming up.

Two of my friends are IE guys. They both got an internship with UPS. I don't know is UPS does internships where you are, but here they pay around $18/hr. I just got an internship myself at Busch Gardens in HR. Good luck with your search.

I have a friend who was hired in as full time about a year ago. Good pay and he likes his job.

If the Ford plant was still here I woulda said to try there.
My uncle got his Industrial engineering degree in the Philippines and eventually moved here and got a job at the Norfolk Ford plant. Now hes at the Dearborne plant. Hes got it made over there, with his high income and there crappy housing market, he got a really nice house for cheap.
