When they did the service on my car they installed a sticker in the engine bay. I was told that they did that on all cars treated. It should be as easy as popping your hood and looking for the sticker that has the service notice number on it.

Just found this thread searching online. I have an 04 Legacy Wagon with just over 51k on it, it's now sprung the leak from the driver's side head

Looks like I'll be calling SOA next week to try to deal with it.

I've had two Subarus with head gasket problems, a 1999 which fell into the range of what Subaru admitted, and a 2006. The '99 I traded in at 120k with the blown HG for a new '06 which HG is currently being repaired at 98k.

It's my belief that Subaru realized the problem with HGs of the Phase II 2.5 '98-2003(?) after it started happening in high numbers, offered some assistance and advised adding the cooling conditioner to the cars.

However, I keep hearing of owners (like me) having HG problems after those years. As far as I know, the basic engine design of the 99/06 2.5 was similar, and mechanics I spoken with say the HGs deteriorate at the same place, near the exhaust manifold.
While I haven't spoke with anyone at Subaru of America, the service manager at the dealership would not admit to HG issues with these cars.

While I would have loved to spend the time opening up a dialog with SOA about some assistance, the dealership near me was unaccommodating, and I needed my car fixed asap and went to an independent mech.
So I'm out 3.4k (including HG, timing belt, water pump, etc.).
Grumpy, but not surprised. No car lasts forever without maintenance.
