Anything over 80 in Va is reckless driving...the cops in Va are nothing more than glorified tax collectors...esp the stateys...so happy i had a slow car while living there. The joke of the month with my friends use to be who got caught this month...

It's absolutely ridiculous. It seems like a hustle between the state and the attorneys. 6 points Misdemeanor

Yes, your disregard for the law is just the states way of hustling you for money.

You got lucky. I've sped in the northern Midwest and they've never came down hard on me like this. I was nice to the cop too. As soon as I saw him on the side of the road, I knew I was done and pulled over immediately. Happened on the day I had my car fully packed and was moving to Charlotte.

Going 81 in a 70 is reckless. You think it warrants a misdemeanor, and 6 points? That's ridiculous.

Reckless driving, instead of VA, considers if you were swerving, out other people at risk. So if you think it's in the same category as a DUI you must be out if your mind. I'll accept the fees and the ticket, but an 11 year misdemeanor is unacceptable

Well making the decision to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking too much is reckless. Just like making the decision to go 90 in a 70 is reckless according to the VA laws. The simple answer is, don't speed. You made your bed, now you have lay in it. I'd hire a lawyer, but I wouldn't have been speeding in the first place.

This is a loaded question that you're going to try and use to justify your actions. I have driven at speeds above the posted limit in order to keep up with the flow of traffic, but I have never sped recklessly.

I got one through there on 77 north coming out of the tunnel. The [email protected]# behind me was pushing me through the tunnel. It goes to 55 in the tunnel then to 70 when you come out of the tunnel. I was trying to speed up and get out of the fast lane to let him by (because u are not supposed to change lanes in tunnel) and when I looked up after seeing if it was clear to get over, there was a state police and she pulled us both over(the guy on my tail)!! She said I was doing 80 in a 70. I told her I was trying to get over because the guy behind me was almost hitting me in the tunnel because I was doing 60,, she said" you should just let him hit me,,,, then it will be his fault"!! It pissed me off,, I had my 3 year old son in the back and I wanted to say things I can't say on here! I had to keep my wife from cussing her out! Then she went to the guy behind me after getting my info and I could see her showing him with her hands that he was like a foot from my bumper when she saw us! I don't know what she gave him. But I guess I should risk my sons life on some jackleg hitting me from behind next time! Anyway, I got a lawyer and told him everything and he got it dropped. I can send you the guy that help me from Bland. I think he has been there for a long time, so he knows the DA's and stuff! Let me know if you want his info! And I was driving my Acura and not my Subaru's!! And I will do the same thing again to protect my family from being in a wreck!

less than 10 over the posted speed limit usually does not get you a ticket..specially on a highway.

but 20 over..you're getting a ticket...period.

When Virginia changed their speed limits to 70, they didn't make changes to the law. 80mph in a 65mph was reckless driving. Be lucky they didn't take you to the pound me in the a$$ jail.

Get a lawyer. It will be a wicked fine and you'll get a court appearance soon enough in the mail. I hold my breath every time I drive through the commonwealth.

Everyone gets a concealed carry permit, booze in the grocery stores, but heaven forbid you do 10mph over on a deserted interstate. I'll bet you were somewhere on I85 between Petersburg and South Boston in the woods.

Good luck!

More state troopers in Va than mosquitos...landed 3 tickets in 4yrs all on bfe back roads doing no more than 11 over on 2 of them. Only place I've got a speeding ticket in the last 16yrs. On one the cop knew the speeding ticket wouldnt hold so he gave me a disobeying a traffic sign. Same points and cost but not able to be contested.

My fiance was pulled over recently for going 93 in a 70. He was speeding at about 76 in a 70, but had just been passed by someone booking it. The cop was already pulling out in front of us when we came up, so we changed lanes to get out of his way (thinking he was going after the car in front of us), but the cop pulled us over instead. We're trying to fight this as there is no way he was going 93- he'd only just sped up a little because the speed limit had changed from 60 to 70. under_psi : I'd love the name of your lawyer!
