New tentative plan is to start with the Open Track day at Dominion April 28th, and then PITT Race with Chin May 27-28. Who's in?!

According to Dominion's calendar, First Settlers PCA ran there last weekend. I'm curious to hear feedback on any improvements/changes that have been made to resolve some of the issues at the track. Did a little googling, looked on rennlist.com, but haven't turned up any posts by anybody.

As I'm typing this, checked Youtube, found some clips from the FSR event. Based on the description on this clip, sounds like Dominion didn't do anything over the winter [my bolding added]:
Quote:
FSR PCA HPDE at Dominion Raceway 4/1-2.2017 in Blue and White groups with my. Track is very unforgiving. Curbing way too high. Very little runoff anywhere and not enough runoff in turn 1 (2017 vette lost brakes, crashed through tire barrier and went into woods). Bump under bridge will bottom you out while braking. Concrete barriers in many places that dont need to be right on track (turn 2). I hope they improve track as it is so close to my home. It is NOT a track to be driven close to your car setup limits.
I added a comment on that clip. As I said there, I don't have any expectation that the run-off areas and barriers will ever be changed appreciably, as that would require massive efforts to resculpt the landscape. However, the fact that they didn't fix the curbing (looks to all be identical to where it was last fall) or the big bump under the bridge is very surprising and disappointing.

Yeah. That doesn't sound promising. I'd heard they fixed the bump before the bridge. So either they didn't, or it's just come back. Maybe I'll be holding off on that track day. I will be going down there at some point to try the karting. Was thinking the weekend of the 22nd. Will check it out then.

Heard from Felton that they have added a lot of curbing: Exit of 1 on the right, exit of 3 on the left, exit of 7 on the right, all up the climbing esses, and exit of 12 on the right.

The paving company is at the track today to look at the bump into T12, and figure out how/when to repair.

The walls in T2 aren't going to be moved any time soon, so that's that.

If they at least fix the bump into T12, I'll go there again.

Upon further review of the video I linked and my videos from last fall, I do see some new curbing, which is good. Much of the existing curbing, though, is still wrong, and even the new stuff has some issues. I would say the stuff on the exit of turn 1 is too far down track, for instance.

Update from NASA Mid Atlantic email:
Quote:
Update for Dominion Raceway from Chris Cobetto, Director, NASA Mid-Atlantic:

Curbing: Exit curbing is now in place in turns 1, 3, 7 and 12. The new curbing not only provides some great visual cues upon turn entry but has added character to the track adding even better flow. Now a driver knows where the edge of the track is and can better pick entry speeds to maximize speed through the turns.

Guardrail: Added guardrail Turn 8 and 9. The guardrail was two rails high but we felt that it needed to be 3 rails high and Dominion agreed. This provides a higher level of safety as drivers exit turn 7 and add throttle to climb the uphill esses.

Uphill Esses: Grading has been done to smooth out the runoff on driver right on the uphill esses and tire lined barriers have been placed to insure that if a car leaves the track that it doesn't make it to the woods.

Grass and drop off: All natural surfaces are now flush with the asphalt surfaces and grass is growing.

First event of the year at Pitt Race this past weekend. All went well. Car ran great, but have some sort of oil leak. Can't figure out where it's coming from. Theory was that it was the residual grease from all the blown CV boots that's getting hot and dripping down, but after cleaning up as much as possible, it would be surprising if that's it. Oil level was right on the whole time. Never needed to add any. Seems to be running down the passenger side of the transmission, but can't think of anything that could leak oil in that area. Will take out the TMIC and work from the top down, and maybe I can figure it out.

Anyway...the event was a lot of fun. Chin always has such a small car count, there wasn't much traffic. I really love the Pitt Race track, especially now with the new pavement. Highly recommended.

I'll try to get some video up in the next week.

Next event will probably be the TrackDaze at Summit July 1-2.

Coulda held you off a little longer , but I let the Evora by too early, thinking he would pull away quicker than he did. Instead, he held me up down the front straight and slowed way down for the entry of turn 1.

Fun to see the Caddy moving around over the two humps at the crest existing turn 1. I can definitely feel it doing that, but it's interesting to see how visible it is from behind. In the wet session on Saturday I didn't turn off the electronic nannies, and as I was picking up the pace I started to get a brief hit of traction control as the rear would get light over the crest there.

Hey look at that... same seats as me! Wise choice.

Just a heads up I will be running @ every Pocono TNIA event this year as far as I know unless something major comes up. It's just the right price/distance for me to get my fill.

ALSO: Use code "JSCSPEED" for $25 off TNIA events!

A few laps from the final "happy hour" session on Sunday @ VIR with Chin Motorsports.

I was patting myself on the back for smoothly catching the slide in NASCAR, and then the right rear got onto the outside curbing and the rear snapped out again. Whoops!

Nice save!

On a side note. Turns out the oil leak is from the mail seal. It's leaking onto the flywheel and then spewing out from a small opening at the trans housing. Or at least that's the theory. Trans comes out Thursday to get a better look. Going to install an oil cooler while it's there and easier to get to. Hopefully this is the end of the mystery oil leak.

If it's coming from inside the bellhousing, the other common leak point (as mentioned at the track) is the oil separator plate. There are a plethora of threads about it. Subaru has been through a few designs over the years - plastic, cast aluminum, a couple different stamped steel versions. See pics here, as an example. Google for "Subaru oil separator plate" and you can see all sorts of pics and threads and general consternation about that thing. So, I'd be ready to replace (or at least remove and reseal) that thing, too.

I bet that's what it is. I'll make sure they order this part too, just on case. Thanks!

Added a bunch of events from August to November. Had to move November listing to 2nd post because main post was too long.

Going to be at Summit on Sunday with Chin.

Car issues robbed me of much of my run time @ Summit this weekend, so I might run @ Dominion with Trackdaze this Sunday. Need to keep an eye on the weather - long-range forecast isn't looking very promising. And of course I need to fix the car.

Been having a ton of fun and some success at the hillclimbs. If you have a TT legal roll bar (or better) you really should come try it. Next one is Duryea Hillclimb Aug. 19 & 20 in Reading followed by Shenandoah Circuit at Summit Point (run like a time attack) Sept 2 & 3. Here's my video from Polish Mountain Hillclimb in Flintstone MD this weekend...

Signed up for the SCCA PDX @ Dominion Raceway in mid-September. May run Dominion again the following weekend with PCC-Audi Club, or might go up to NJMP, haven't decided yet.
