Default Clunking noise

I've noticed sometimes when I'm shifting into first gear there would be a clunk every so often. It only happens when I'm going into first gear. Has anyone else experienced this? I emailed the dealer asking about it and the guy told me every single BRZ he's driven does that.

This has DEFINITELY been discussed here, but I'm having trouble finding the thread. I'm sure it's in this BRZ Forum, though. I'll keep checking.

This was covered in the May techtalk newsletter

Quote:
BRZ MANUAL TRANSMISSION SOUNDS

You may notice, or customers may question, a "thump" or "thunk" sound intermittently when placing the new six-speed manual transmission into first or reverse while stopped. This is a characteristic of the transmission operation which occurs when any remaining input shaft rotation is brought to a quick stop by gear selection. If enough time is given for the shaft to stop turning on its own, then no thump will occur. No wear or damage is occurring as a result of this action. This sound may be more noticeable as the gear oil warms and gear selection is able to be accomplished with greater speed.

I'm glad Toyota could put some Subaru-style farm equipment noises into the BRZ to remind everyone that it's still a Subaru at heart.

Nice. I too was wondering the same about the clunk. Also, with the radio off I noticed the tranny makes a lot of gear noise similar to an STi, even though its a Toyota tranny.

That's probably due to stiff mounts (wild guess).

Anyone else notice a bit of "groaning" from the rear when taking off from a stop? It's most noticable when the car has been sitting. Not quite a shudder, but I can feel it and barely hear it. LSD maybe? It happens when starting in a straight line as well as turning (like getting out of a parking space).

So far nothing has fallen apart and it sounds like just another one of those quirky Subaru noises.

Is it really a common problem for every BRZ/FRS though?

Well, I'm at over 5000 miles and I can confirm.

I believe Kartboy is working on trans bushings to help.

Push the clutch pedal in for a few sec before shifting into 1st.

I find that leaving the shifter in gear when coming to a stop helps. this way the output shaft is still connected to the wheels when they stop, so it stops instead of spinning freely which causes the clunk

I hate it but sadly I'm used to it. My Genesis Coupe did it as well.

As long as it's normal and nothing is being damaged I'm fine with it.

This is correct. I have noticed a couple other noises on mine that bug me, not sure if they are normal or not. My trans makes a medium-loud whirring sound when the car is warmed up and I let off the clutch while in neutral at a stand still. Sounds like a throw out bearing, it started at around 3k miles. Anyone else hearing this?

Mine hasn't done that, I'll listen for it. I usually have the radio on so I don't really pick up on these things.
