When I had a modem/wifi combo, comcast would routinely update DNS settings to their servers, so all my devices had to specify the pihole address as primary DNS when connected to my network. I have my router assigning a static IP address to the pi, and the pi is hard-wired to it. It's interesting to look at the pihole logs every once in a while to see your modem is hitting some server at NASA 20-30 times a day. The pihole only works for devices connected to your local network, unless you want to set up that same machine to expose your IP address to the entire planet. I'm also running a web server on my local network to host a personal website, so I didn't want to try screwing around with that.

Are you having any delays with web pages, Netflix, Hulu etc? I can set this thing up in probably 10min, it is very easy. In fact, I could spin a VM now and have it run under Debian if needed. But I rather use the Pi3 I have for this and be done. Might do it tonight once I get home.

The pihole seems to cache frequent lookups - I stream netflix on a machine through it without any issues that I can notice. What I have run into occasionally is youtube videos still showing ads, but I think that's more from having a device connecting to my other wifi network that is running outside the pihole. Lots of ad-heavy pages run much faster, since they don't actually make the full network round-trip... they return an empty response when the domain is in the pihole's block list. If you do run into anything that's getting blocked you can whitelist the related domain, but I haven't needed to do that.

I also can't recommend this case enough: the pi fits in it really well, and there are small cutouts for cables/sd card, etc. I like the possibility of running multiple PIs for dedicated things, and color-coding each one's responsibility.

I use local blacklist and have similar issues. I haven't gone so far as to note what sites or domains are trying to load ad/other crap and find a way to redirect it so it doesn't cause delays.

*I run blacklist mostly just to reduce annoyance, not security. I don't want to field questions like "why is this bar over here saying it can't load" everyday for other people on my network so I just keep them on the systems.

oddly I tried to edit my post and got a security warning from nasioc. hmfff

abbreviated edit: if there are a good number of devices and users that use phones and tablets that would normally need to be rooted to add black list to the pihole is one of the best things to do for your network if rooting every odd thing to add a black list isn't something that sounds exciting to you. I normally only use a laptop at home with a blacklist but if I had kids/other humans using locked devices the pihole/something at the entry point would be used without a doubt.

pfsense is another good tool for gatekeeping.

So got Pi-Hole up and running. Immediately it started doing its job.

I only see my PC, need to figure out how i can see all the clients that pass though Pi-Hole even though they are wireless

Rebooted my phone so it would take the new DNS setting, Accuweather App does not work any more

You'll likely need to turn off the DHCP server from your router if you're not explicitly telling your other devices to only connect to your pihole. If the pihole isn't your AP and sitting between your router and ISP you may see not individual devices.

If you can/care spin up a virtual machine if/when you might need to troubleshoot what's going where to know if a problem or concern is the pi or just something not on your network. Set the vm what would be your normal setup without the pi so you have a quick comparison to suss out any issues before you make changes.

Got most of it working. Have clients showing up now, after making the change Settings -> DNS bottom of page Forward Conditional, added the router's IP and my local domain. Wireless clients started showing up after that.

I also had to change the /etc / hosts file on the Pi-Hole, because for some reason the entry that was on file was wrong. I had 127.0.1.1 pointing to Pi-Hole when the local host IP address was 127.0.0.1. Once I fixed the entry for Pi-Hole to have the same IP as the localhost I was able to run the update for Update Gravity under tools. Before I was getting a DNS resolution is currently unavailable.

edit---
It seems Nasioc Server does not like when you have '/etc / hosts' with no spaces, I was getting the following

This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. The action you just performed triggered the security solution. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data.

Ha... that's why I got my security warning last night. I couldn't get back to what I typed out and couldn't find why it blocked me. Learned something frustrating today outside of a kid I was working with having mentioned he just had someone explain "serial connections" to him and still didn't understand the point of it. "GD'it I'm old"

TLR: Those with pi hole's, how well does it work at blocking youtube ads?

assumptions:

I mentioned above I blacklist on my local machines so I don't have to deal with other users on my network upset the large number of pretty pictures aren't loading since they were all ads and they're being blocked. Looking at the pi hole it looks to do the same thing but at the boundary between your network and the greater the internet. Using the blacklist I forgot youtube had ads until some change and now it seems most video ads get through... guessing they just ride on the same network now so if you don't want ads you pay for youtube or don't use youtube.

Some of YouTube ads come through youtube.com which is not blocked my Pi-Hole. I have seen also where if ads for youtube are blocked, the video is black but you have sound.

My Pi-Hole is running great.

Thanks for the info. I haven't had an issue with the video but with the few ads that are blocked the video wont start on its own. It also happens when ads are sprinkled throughout a long youtube vid.

Yep. We learned early on that blocking YouTube ads = no bueno. Many videos just won't work right when you do.

So is there anything interesting or worthwhile to do with an older single-core RPi 1 B+? It's slow as **** running anything with a GUI. It seems like any fun or useful projects require a significantly faster 2 or 3 and I already have a 2 B and a 3 B to play with.

Is Pi-Hole light enough to run to run well on a 1 B+ under Stretch Lite or am I overestimating how much juice it needs?

Backup data to an old flash drive. I'm not suggesting a new 10TB network storage system before someone starts frothing at the mouth.

Pi Hole shouldn't be a stress to the pi. I tried to find stress test but I didn't find anything not questionable to back this up. They work the same as using black list in a machine's hosts file. I use local blacklist and haven't noted the pi's being bothered with them.

Pi Hole and data backup.

So I got Pi-Hole set up last night on the RPi 1 B+. Interesting project. It does what it says but it seems like Ublock Origin does a better job of filtering. I guess it needs some tweaking.

I run Pi-Hole in a VM on my server, just so there's one less thing to plug in

Blocking youtube ads is a big cat & mouse game, as google keeps rotating hosts (and even uses direct IPs some times). I have good luck with Adblock+ killing all youtube, and the Pi-Hole taking care of pretty much everything else.

Going to (re)start my Pi based carputer project pretty soon.

Meh, you can get YouTube Premium in Canada now. I probably watch more YouTube than I do Netflix.. so it's completely worth it to me to never see any ads. The music streaming included with it is just icing on top.

I forgot I had a pi zero, I found it clearing up my bin of tech stuff. I was about to get a drive to flash for it. Already had one in it... works as it should, the last time it was used was in 2017. I shouldn't be surprised it works as normal but I am. I planned to setup an old +B for a pxe server but the zero just volunteered itself.

"NEAT" -no one

Anyone use a GoPro as a security camera? Mine gets used 6 hours a year now. It's a Hero HD, so it may be too old. I was hoping it would work as a usb webcam.

Oh, cool - camera to usb thingy https://www.knowhero.com/guides/goprowebcam

The ugly truth about tech is if you want something that is widely available it will be very likely cheaper to buy it. If not cheaper it's a better deal when you account for your time unless you like to cobble things together.

I have used Foscams with no complaints. But I never keep them up outside of a specific purpose. <- saying I have no real extended use experience.

I was looking into a Pi3 for mom. She just needs a desktop that can run a browser at a normal speed.
Looking into reviews, I dont think this will cut it.
I did find other developer boards that are much more powerful and useful with this regard, for a little more.

meh, just needed to write something.

Is your mom Leet?

I think the old B+ can run fine for a desktop. A current model shouldn't have any issues.

I looked up youtube videos of people browsing using the B+ vs other comparable SBCs. It looked painful.
Right now, we have her old eeepc (atom cpu) connected to the monitor and its really bad.
