Default 2008 Subaru Outback Impreza Sport - Shuddering on Acceleration

I have a 2008 Subaru Outback Impreza Sport, manual transmission. Today, upon taking it out of the driveway and accelerating, it started to shudder, or perhaps stutter?. Specifically, upon pushing the accelerator, it accelerates in slow jerks, never getting much over 20-30 mph. Push in the clutch, and the engine revs without an issue. Put it in gear, and it shakes and accelerates and then doesn't, and then accelerates and then doesn't. The car doesn't feel like it's physically shaking, as if a part is catching - rather, it feels like it's gone...iffy.

Sorry - I'm new to describing the issues, so I'm trying here. Thoughts?

No Check Engine Light? I had a similar problem when my 2011 OBS was misfiring due to a worn out spark plug. It also did not give me a CEL.

No CEL. However, did your `11 rev without an issue? Mine does this only in gear.

Worn out clutch? Search on the symptoms.

It could be a clogged cat... when they clog, the engine struggles under load (in gear) but will rev ok with no load (clutch in).

I think that if it was ignition related, there would be misfire codes turning on the check engine light.

Do you have access to any kind of scan tool with live data?

When getting moving, does the tach go up fast but not the speedo?
If so, sounds like slipping clutch.

How many miles on it?
How long since last tuneup?

Yeah, it'd rev fine, but low-end power would be rough, and it'd seem to smooth out at higher RPMs, but accelleration was weak.

I only had one bad plug, it wore out about 2x faster than the rest even through I'd replaced all 4 at the same time. So I probably just got one bad luck of the draw.

I would think that if you had two go bad about the same time, it might behave like you're describing. So Check your plugs. They're pretty easy on the EJ253. And Get a scan tool on it just for poops and giggles. Advance or Autozone will scan for free.

I would second taking it to an Autozone or Advance to have them hook up a scan tool. Some codes don't throw a CEL, and others won't throw it unless the code has failed on multiple occasions.

While I could see it being an ignition problem, I'd be inclined to say this sounds more like a fuel issue. Either filter or pump. It may be able to provide enough fuel at idle but not able to keep up when under load.

This is assuming it idles without issue or vibration.
