Default Another Mountain Biking Thread!!!

Right now I ride a near stock 2004 Rockhopper.
- A1 aluminum frame
- Manitou Six 80-100 mm travel fork
- Shimano Alivio shifter/brake combo
- Shimano Alivio Front Derailleur
- Shimano Deore Rear Derailleur
- Pretty basic entry level stuff as with the rest of the stuff above
- Shimano SPD clipless pedals (only not stock item)

A friend has offered to sell his built bike to me for $1500.
- 2004 Specialized Enduro S-Works frame ( )
- Specialized XC handlebars
- Hayes HFX 9 Carbon hydraulic disk brakes
- Shimano XTR Rear Derailleur
- Shimano Deore Front Derailleur
- Manitou Minute 2 Fork (130mm travel)
- Sram trigger shifters
- Other pretty decent stuff

I started riding in 2004. The last couple months, I've been feeling like the bike is the bottleneck of what I can do. I've been doing a lot rougher stuff that would be a lot more fun with better brakes and suspension. What I've been riding has also got me thinking that a full suspension would be nice. Hence the Enduro.

I figure I could upgrade the rockhopper w/ a Deore front derailleur, as I've been pretty unhappy with the Alivio piece. Also, I'd really like to get disk brakes (Avid Juicy 5) as I end up riding in the wet a lot and the v-brakes just don't seem to have enough bite a lot of times. I also think my ride would be much improved with a better front fork. It was fine for the early days, but the stuff I'm riding now seems to cater to an air sprung fork.

Should I save a couple more pennies and jump to far better setup in the S-works or just do the $600 in upgrades to my rockhopper? The bike was only $500 new.

Plan C is to keep riding the hell out of my rockhopper until I break it, make a sad face to my fiancee, and her buy me a new bike (she makes a lot more money than me. )

i'd give him $1250. 05 S Works Enduro demo bikes go for ~$1500-$1700.

i wouldn't bother upgrading the rockhopper. it's a good starter bike, but you can get a Stump Jumper with V brakes for $1250. I built one for a customer today and am now thinking about picking one up.(especially since i can get it for ~$700 ) You get a lot of bike for the money, especially the +$500 fork. Only thing I'd change would be the levers and maybe a riser bar.

If you buy the enduro have your friend throw in a full tune, and throw some lighter tires on it.(if he hasn't already) The enduro is a really nice bike, especially the S works, but it's a bit too much travel for me. Ask if you can take it for a test ride on a trail.

1) Can you get the stumpjumper for me for $700?
2) He's willing to give me the bike for a week or two to test ride.

Do you think I could build a Stumpjumper (ebay for frame and nashbar/greenfish/performance bike for the other components) w/ hydraulic brakes for near the $1250?

I've though about just getting a $1000ish hardtail with really nice components instead. It'd be easier on my wallet and probably less overkill than the S-works.

130mm of travel seems like a lot for the type of riding you do. So definitely try it out first if you are thinking of buying i.t

Dolphin, I've found a couple 05 Stumpjumper (disk) hardtails for $1100 and $950 on mtbr.com classifieds. The one for $950 claims less than 150 miles but it looks more beaten than my bike (lots of scratches, a bunch of paint missing from the crank where it looks like his shoe was rubbing or something). The $1100 says it is immaculate but has no visual proof. I'm thinking about lowballing both and seeing what I get.

So it's a built-up version of this frame, correct? With the little "brain" on the left side of the rear triangle?

That's a sick setup - it rides like a hardtail until you hit a bump, then gulps the bump. The Minute 3 fork is also nice, and you can adjust the travel down a bit if you think 130mm is too much. The XTR rear is nice, the Deore front is meh not bad (sure it's not LX or XT?) but out of place on this frame.

What kind of rims/hubs? What kind of cranks? How about saddle and post? If those are all high-end items, it's worth the $1500. If they're Deore level, especially the wheelset, lowball him.

I'm biased toward the Enduro.

Fuzz, yes, that is the frame. I asked about the deore FD and he said that he went with it because it is light, cheap, and easy to adjust. I can't remember the rims/hubs for the life of me. The seatpost is Thomson. I don't remember which saddle it has. The crank is a Raceface, IIRC.

It would cost you $3,000 plus to duplicate that bike with new parts. It's used, and your friend got a lot of it wholesale, I bet (works in a shop or something?). $1,500 is a fair price if the bike has low miles. Look on eBay for Sworks enduros with good parts mixes. Here's mine, mostly stock:

Yeah, he works at a bike shop. I've been haggling with a guy online about an 05 Stumpjumper Disk hardtail and I have him down to $965 but the bike has more visual wear than I think I'm comfortable with.

That just looks like more than 150 miles wear to me. It just seems like the guy was slacked completely in maintenance.

WTF happened to the crank? And did he take a piece out of the disc.... Maybe it was 150 miles straight downhill. The S-Works is a nice bike, it was one of the few FS I tried out that I thought fit right.

Oh, and I'll add that Race Face cranks are awesome. Maybe it's the bottom bracket they use, but compared to similar Shimano cranks, they feel 2x stiffer.

don't buy that used SJ. it looks terrible. A brand new SJ with rim brakes is $1250, so i would just spend the extra cash.

Ride the Enduro and see if you like it. It's a good bike for some people, and too much for others(myself included). If it was an S Works Epic I would be tlling you to buy it immediately.

That Stumpy is worn. Look for toasted hubs and bottom bracket, maybe headset. What lying sack of chiz is trying to tell you the bike has 150 miles? My bike probably has ~ 1,000 over 3 years and looks 100x newer than that.

Just buy the damned SWorks. You'll always wonder...

That's what I was thinking about the SJ. My rockhopper looks amazing except on the chainstay (didn't put a sleeve on it) and I have at least a grand on it. I can't imagine how that SJ would look that way w/ only 150 miles.

I'll ride the s-works this coming weekend. Unfortunately, it means that I will have to buy a new bike at some point relatively soon based on the fact that it'd be impossible to go back to my RH after riding the s-works.

Thanks for the advice guys. Maybe I'll be able to find an SJ demo somewhere later in summer for under $1k.

To the OP, sounds good to me, its an awesome bike.

my bike looks like that on but it's a '93 Cannondale with unknown miles (alot, since I wore out the original drivetrain in '00).
