Default Rubbing/scraping noise from rear wheel or brakes.

I cannot seem to find a solid answer for the problem I'm experiencing so I figured I'd post.

When I am slowly accelerating from a stop or coasting at low speeds (5-15mph) there is a rubbing noise coming from what appears to be the rear right side of the car. The noise has gotten noticeably louder over the past 5k miles or so. It also only happens when the brakes are NOT applied. If the rubbing/scraping noise is occurring, gently stepping on the brakes stops the noise. As soon as I let off the brakes the noise comes back. The noise also occurs just the same whether I'm going straight or turning.

Initially I thought it was my brake pads. However, I recently (within the last 500 miles) replaced my brake pads with new Hawk HPS pads. Since doing this the noise has remained consistent to how it was before the brake pad change. I'm pretty stumped right now and wanted to post to see if anyone had any insight on the issue.

I did a little research and came across a couple threads saying that it might be a bent dust shield rubbing against the rotor. However, this wouldn't explain why the scraping noise goes away as soon as I touch the brakes, would it?

Any ideas?

i came in with the dust shield suggestion, but...

can you put it up on jackstands and stick it in gear?

I can do that. What would I be looking for?

I remember reading this would happen if the pads were installed backwards, seemed to be a common issue with the dealer. Hope this helps.

Although you car isn't that old it is very common for the backing plates to rust. The rust pushes the lip of plate for the ebrake assembly into the groove on the rotor. Take off the rotor and look for shiny spot where the inner diameter of the rotor contacts the backing plate.

But wouldn't it keep rubbing even when the brakes are applied? And wouldn't it be more persistent. The occurrence of the noise is sporadic.

This weekend I'll get the car on the lift and start digging around. I'm hoping it's something simply like the dust plate.

It wouldn't be hard to find out if its the dust plate. You would be able to see where its rubbing, look for fresh metal on the plate. If there is,they are very easy to bend back or "adjust" to where it wouldn't rub/hit (if that is the problem). Process of elimination one step at a time.

Sounds like the dust plate but check all the bolts on the brakes/suspension on the suspect area.

Drive 10 mph and pull on the hand brake. Does the noise go away?

No actually...when you hit the brakes you torque on the backing plate slightly and the tolerance of what we're talking about is less than slightly... I just had this issue and it was pretty bad.. had to take a side grinder to it

Pull the rotor and look, its easy..

I know this is 5 years old but this is exactly what I'm experiencing now and haven't been able to figure out what the problem is

Have you pulled the rotor to see if it's rubbing against the backing plate?

Did you recently change your parking brake shoes? If you screw up the assembly it can cause a nasty scraping sound.

Same here, but noise is only there during cornering. Pads look good so rotors are coming off tomorrow. Ill post what I find. Its gotta be something with my p brake.

Check wheel bearing for play as well. Cornering can lean the rotor into the backing plate.

That thought came to mind, but I sorta expect the bearings to be singing if they are that bad off. I'm not getting to it today, but I'll give it a wiggle tomorrow before I look at the P brakes.

Bearings have no play, so I pulled the rotors off. There was a small spot that showed contact just under the adjuster and the lip on the rotor that fits into the dust shield (I'll have to figure out how to post pics). Just thinking about the geometry there (i.e. The only way that gap can close when loaded in a turn), the only pivot point is the bearing. Turning the hub against the backlash in the rear diff seems easier than with a good "stiff" bearing. I hate throwing parts at a problem to diagnose them, but as much as it goes against my experiences of bad wheel bearings, I can't see this being any thing else...in my case anyway.

Short term, I would just bang the dust shield to clear, maybe hit it with some paint, go put more miles on it.
Just my opinion.

Post is ancient but what is the fix for this? My brakes make a noise if I engage the parking break and only goes away when I pull on the break going five to ten mph

Are you rear (main) brakes making noise when you engage the parking brake? I think I'd have to see the scenario. If you hear a noise when you're rolling and engage the parking brake, it sort of depends on the noise. If you hear grinding or metal on metal with the brake engaged, your parking brake shoes are likely just worn.

When I engage it it does not make a sound only when I disengage then begin to drive sometimes it makes the noise. It’s a grinding type noise that sounds like something is stuck and to make it go away I pull up the brake slightly while it’s rolling then it goes away. I think u may be right about the brake shoes tho they haven’t been changed and the car has 140,000 plus. I appreciate the reply thank you

Dealt with this issue. Punished the emergency brake backing plate with the grinder, no more noise!

Haha. Thats funny I'd forgotten about this thread. I'm finally getting the parts for the H6 upgrade and will be grinding the same spot in the process. Glad to hear that got rid of the noise for you.
