Are they both EJ25D? If so, probably; however, 99 is right when they started going to Phase II stuff.

99 legacy still had EJ25D (DOHC).
they got the phase 2 BLOCK+crank+rods but had 25D square-dish pistons under the 25D DOHC heads.

the engine in my 97 OBW is a 99 block, confirmed by the VIN stamp (i had the engine out for the last 3 weeks doing HG and was pleased to find it was a P2 block)

Interesting... So basically if I take a PII block, crank and rods and put the PI heads and pistons on it, it will work? I have a PII that broke a timing belt and a fully functional PI engine but I have always been afraid to swap it into my Legacy due to the rod size and the amount of abuse it will see...

Back to the OP:

Very similar but not the same, IMHO.

It might work as you have a manual.

I know if won't work w/the Automatic as the TCU/TCM was for the Phase 2 trans in the '99 and I got a code when I tried a '99 ECU in my '98 Automatic.

Also, FWIW, the '96 - '98 ECUs will work in either manual or automatic equipped cars....'99???? I believe they did get specific ECUs depending on the trans type after that.
