Grinding noise from transmission (when foot off gas pedal)?
Problem: grinding noise from transmission area with foot off the gas pedal while cruising on 02 WRX
How long has the car been making the noise: for a couple of years now... Today, I had new clutch installed by a shop, but noise has gotten noticeably worse. However, with foot back on the gas pedal, noise disappears completely. Anyone knows what could be causing this noise? Car has had this noise for a while now, but has only gotten noticeably worse after new clutch was installed.

I have the same thing happening to my car. I was thinking it might be my exhaust though.

That is one possibility, but I wonder if transmission itself can make such grinding noise under condition I described above. It's kind of annoying.

Common issues I believe are the standard "subaru deceleration noise" and also clutch chatter. I think I've read on here that 02-03's are notorious for clutch chatter, and that it can be made worse with different flywheels and maybe clutches. Mine makes an aweful scraping noise when I let off the gas all the way down between 3000->2200. Goes away when gas is given or when clutch is pressed or in neutral. But it will happen any time I take my foot off if the engine is between 2200-3000rpm. I've just grown to live with it for now as I think its ok and not doing any terrible harm. You can try searching on here for the decel noise and search out threads with tire pressures in them. Supposedly you can lower your rear tire pressure a few psi lower then the fronts I think and it helps lower the noise...but do a little snooping and see what you come up with.

It's not clutch chatter, but your car seems to have same problem as mine where car makes an awful scraping noise when letting off gas completely while cruising...

I just bought a 02 wrx with an ultralite flywheel, brand new stage 2 clutch and sti SS clutch line, I too hear the loud decel chatter/scraping. Previous owner said it started when he installed the flywheel, It also goes away when the clutch is disengaged. I thought it could possibly be the release bearing, but again the previous owner assured me the clutch is mint. Tranny has no issues and shifts amazingly.
Im convinced with kornykidd0.. its notorious and might always be! |

Something similar, but mine sounds more like grinding/scraping noise.

Probably more metallic right? Some people were saying that setting lower tire pressures in the rear could help.

I really am not sure where it's coming from... I plan to install rear diff locking bolt to see if it helps in anyway.

on each side of the car there is a roughly triangular plate that locates and attaches the foreward outboard rear diff carrier bushings
sometimes these get MISTAKENLY used to lift the vehicle and get bent and cause vibration to the body these can sometimes be hammered/bent back into shape |

Uncle Scotty,
Thanks for the suggestion. Is that the plate where outrigger bushing goes? |

You have a valid point there - I've always used bolt located in that plate to jack up the car. I will take a look, but don't think mine is bent.
Thanks again. |

I found out that 17mm bolt on the plate was loose, which may have contributed to the grinding noise. Haven't test driven the car yet after tightening the bolt, but will find out tomorrow..

I have the same problem on my 03 wrx. I just had my original clutch replaced at 85k. I had an exedy oem replacement put in and had the group N sti tranny mount installed as well. The car never had the grinding noise before and now makes the noise. They told me it was the stiffer mount. Anyone else get the noise when putting on the mount?

Even after tightening 17mm bolt on the plate noise is still present. Back to square one.

Thanks for the suggestion. I also have TIC rear diff. bushing, which makes noise more pronounced.
Two things I am going to do: 1) visually check plates for any bend 2) install rear sub-frame locking bolt. |

Uncle Scotty,
Noise has gotten probably 10x louder after I got clutch replaced and flywheel resurfaced by a reputable shop. Noise appears to be coming from transmission / drive shaft area whenever foot is off the gas. Plates will be replaced and rear diff. fluid will be drained/refilled. Will look for any chunk of metals. Will also look for loose bolts... Considering noise has gotten 10x worse after clutch replacement, I believe noise may be related to clutch/resurfaced flywheel. Can't say for sure though. Bingo, you just solved your problem. How much material did they take off or your flywheel?
The sound you are describing is the exact symptoms when a lightened flywheel is installed. My bugeye made the same noises the moment I changed the clutch and installed a Streetlight flywheel. |
