Why its a good idea to wrap your headers
Dont know if this has been shown before but here is a boost plot from my car with my Synic Equal length headers pre-wrap and post-wrap. This was made using UTI's Log analyzer. Green line is with the wrap, its making more boost becasue it was cooler out that night than the pre-wrap night.

Very nice. I'm surprised something this simple hasn't been done before. Bravo!!

Cool, so, unless I'm reading it wrong, you're boosting ~500 (give or take depending on the RPM's) RPM sooner? Saweet.

What's the ambient temperature difference? I wouldn't trust the data until I knew that.

Would the cooler temp also shift the graph to the left a little? Or just affect top boost?

isn't:
colder air=denser air? denser air=more power? Looks like exactly what that graph shows. More boost at all RPMs. Due to lower intake temperatures. |

I don't get it....
Are you trying to show the difference that a wrapped header makes? You are comparing two different nights with different temps and obviously much different boost plots. |

Yes, but look at the top of the plot from 4700 to 6000. There's only about 1psi difference. Throughout the rest of the plot the difference is 2.5 to 5psi or so. While it may not be completely scientific (eg. identical temp, baro, and humidity) to me, at least, it's a good indicaton that he's making boost significantly sooner when wrapped.

too many variables.. but im sure the header wrap is helping regardless

it defiantly helps. just by keeping engine bay temps way down and keeping the EGTs slightly higher too the turbo, which equals better spool. I have wrapped headers/uppipe and would never not wrap a set.

This is NOT a new concept and many have done it on any vehicle or engine use (ie generators). The documented down side: potential corrosion of your headers by retaining moisture, salts, etc. Spilled oil will also soak in to the wrap. The best, more effective option, although more expensive is to have them ceramic coated, at which time you can also port and polish.

Yes its not scientific but it is a good indication of how the car is spooling. No matter how cold it gets, its not going to account for a ~500rpm difference in spool up. Intake temperature(speed density/blow through) on the cooler night was 46 degrees vs 57 from the warmer night. I had recently added a GM solenoid to my setup to take advantage of Ride5000's hybrid method of controlling boost and Im realizing now that some of the tubing I had to use was of different sizes and that may have affected the boost. I test drove it after the install and I had to adjust my boost back down becasue it was >25psi after this install of the solenoid. Regardless, you can see how the spool is dramatically improved. Case: Races XS on this board has a coated perrin header and recently went to a track day where he melted part of the plastic on his motor. I can touch the headers on my car after a run and not get burned, if I try and get near my coated uppipe, I will almost certainly get burned. I know its not new, but I have not seen documented proof that header wrap decreases lag, so I figured Id add it. |

Thanks for the graph either way.
As far as the wrapping goes, wouldn't coating it also help preven the degredation of the metal once it's wrapped? |

...after having seen failed power steering lines and oil leaks on these cars that have sprayed the exhaust.....I would say that header wrap soaked in either of these would make a most spectacular, and inextinguishable, fire
....coated pipes would be far less prone to this sort of conflagration |
