Thanks. I decided to just ground the wire. Now the unit shuts off as soon as I shut down the ignition, whether or not I’ve opened the door.

That works too as long as you keep the engine running when a good song is on

I wouldn't recommend it unless you get them real cheap, but if you wanted to buy a HK Map WRX Radio, and a non-HK Map Outback radio, you could try to swap the HK radio face into the Outback radio base. The connector is the same but I'm not sure if they are pin compatible. May work great and do what you want, may not work at all, or may damage the units.

The Map radio would probably be simpler but you could remove the amp and re-wire to get a Phone radio working in there. This would be uncharted territory.

(There's probably something on this that i missed), but would this also be a similar way to using a 2019 STi radio to a 2016 WRX or would it be entirely different?
(the 2019 STi radio does not have HK and map)

The 2019 STI Radio CAN have HK & Map if the buyer got the Limited model. If they went with a premium then correct you would have the more basic "Phone" button radio.

If you are swapping a 19 prem wrx radio in to a 16 prem wrx then the swap should be pretty easy, would need a few things like the door switch wire and the newer usb jack but the radio itself might work with the existing harness.

You'd want to add the USB and the wire to the door switch but otherwise it may swap right in to your 2016

Many thanks for putting this information out there. Been wanting to do this for awhile now, hoping to find a good price on the head unit.

Hey all, big thanks for this post and the plethora of information. I will say that the post can be a bit overwhelming and it's actually a LOT easier than anticipated. All you need is a CarPlay (map button) Harman Kardon head unit, new 2.1A USB port, the matching Harman Kardon amp, and you can buy every adapter you need from Auto Harness. They were super helpful and got me everything I needed for $160.

I do have one problem that I am hoping someone might be able to shed some light on. After I installed all the new parts, everything fired right up. I went through my functions checks and found one problem:
1. The driver side switch for the passenger window does not work now.
2. The passenger side switch for the window works BUT the auto up/down does not work.
Note: When I first checked the windows, the driver side switch for the driver window worked but the auto up/down did not work. After trying a few times (~30 seconds), the auto up/down featured started working. Its been a few days now and problems 1 and 2 are still persisting.

This was all uncharted territory when I completed the swap 3 years ago. Care to share a pic of the harness they pre-built for you?

Not sure about the window issue, did you tap into any of those wires?

Dude, what you accomplished and gave to the community was phenomenal! I was so excited when I found your post and that I could add CarPlay to my STI. I sincerely appreciate it!

Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures of the harnesses, but I reached out to Auto Harness and Brian knew exactly what I needed and I think they are all listed on the website as well.

Dang, I was hoping maybe somebody might have had the same issue as me with the windows. I did not tap into anything, everything was plug and play for me. So strange. I am going to try and uninstall everything and reinstall to see if that helps. I am wondering if I maybe accidentally pinched a wire when I was putting the head unit back into the dash?

The only thing I can think of, is what does Brian's harness connect to in order to determine when the driver's door is opened to shut the radio off?

He uses wire that you ground out. Just the plug goes into the back of the HU, has a black wire running off of it, and I just soldered on a connector and grounded it to the radio bracket.

But do you think that would cause the passenger side window switch not to work?

Encase anyone runs into this problem too, there was no issues with the installation, wiring, or instructions provided by the OP. Super simple fix, because the battery was unhooked for so long, the window module needed to be reset.
1. Car set to ON but not started
2. From the side that is not working, roll window down half way.
3. Roll window all the way up and hold for one second.
4. Roll window all the way down (non-auto, single click)
5. Auto roll the window back up.
