As the automotive marketplace continues to move towards electrification, Subaru is focused on how our future sports and performance cars should evolve to meet the needs of the changing marketplace and the regulations and requirements for greenhouse gasses (GHG), zero emissions vehicles (ZEV), and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ).

As part of that effort, Subaru Corporation is exploring opportunities for the next generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification. In the meantime, a next generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform.

The Subaru WRX STI and the STI brand represent the zenith of Subaru’s performance vehicles exemplifying Subaru’s unique DNA and rally heritage. As we look to the future, we also look forward to incorporating the essence of STI into our next generation of vehicles.

The only reason I thought the CVT GT trim made sense was because it would be close to or overlap with a manual STI in price. But to not have a manual GT now is comical.

The optimist inside me wonders if they could rebadge the GR Corolla. Didn't Subaru say something about not being defined by the boxer engine at some point? And weren't their rumors of a Subaru Yaris clone a couple years ago?

I'd like to say it's a total surprise, but FA24DIT power output and lowish redline was not an encouraging sign.
Then, as I said before, STI hasn't been working on the turbo FA at all. Zero motorsport application from STI; nothing. They kept polishing the EJ instead.

Of course, I've been saying that, so that's not news.

An STI EV sounds like a very bad idea.

This isn't as bad if they actually make more STI/tS things. I'd consider a BRZ tS still. Or an Impreza tS, maybe.

I'm interested in an exciting EV, but yeah, I'm not sure the STI should go that way. I think a wrx ev would make more sense since the wrx has always been the more "commuter friendly" of the two.

Guys the article does say that they’re exploring different things for the next gen STI “including electrification”, doesn’t mean it’ll for sure be a full blown EV. A hybrid option would be fine and still offers the possibility of a manual. Or this could just be me wishful thinking….sigh

But in the meantime, "a next generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform" would suggest there won't be a new STI for quite a few years.

Jesus, this is going down in history as Japanese Auto Fail Week.

Subaru announced no next-gen STI. And Acura announced that a CVT is standard in the Integra, and there is no AWD coming.

I just popped back in to say that I realized this while I was taking a dump (which is where the best ideas arrive).

They're not making an STI based off of the current WRX, which is exactly what I wanted them to do in the first place (and we should all be thankful). They've been trying to make the WRX and STI more separate anyway, so a hybrid STI is perfectly fine with me as long as it isn't PHEV.

The article is worded very carefully.
