Retro-styled Hyundai N Vision 74 concept reportedly headed to production

Unveiled in 2022, the Hyundai N Vision 74 concept put a modern spin on a little-known part of the carmaker's heritage. Although it was billed as a simple design study, the retro-styled coupe has allegedly received the green light for production and is a few weeks away from its debut.

Without citing sources, South Korean publication Money Today wrote that the N Vision 74 concept will join the Hyundai catalog as a regular-production model sooner rather than later. Hyundai hasn't commented on the report, and it hasn't announced plans to build the N Vision 74 concept, but some of its top executives have voiced their support for a production-bound coupe inspired by the design study. "My personal wish is to produce this vehicle. It's at first probably an investment, but if we could see this vehicle really out there and people buying it, I would be very happy," Till Wartenberg, Hyundai's vice president of N brand management and motorsport, told The Autopian in 2023.

Of course, it takes much more than a bullet point on an executive's wish list to fast-track a car to production. Market demand, pricing, and production feasibility are among the factors that companies need to take into account before saying "yes" to a new model. The N Vision 74 has received positive feedback from enthusiasts and journalists around the world, but whether that's enough to build it remains unclear.

It's too early to tell how the design — which borrows styling cues from the Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed 1974 Pony concept — will evolve as the coupe makes the jump from the show floor to the showroom floor. Money Today claims that Fabrizio Giugiaro, Giorgetto Giugiaro's son, was put in charge of the exterior design. If the report is accurate, it's reasonable to assume that many of the more extroverted styling cues (including the gaping vents, the massive wing, and the huge rear diffuser) will get toned down. Another point that's up in the air is the drivetrain: The concept landed with a 670-horsepower hydrogen-electric hybrid system, but it might be too early to bring it to production.

We won't have to wait long to find out if Hyundai is really making the N Vision 74 a reality. The report claims that the coupe will make its debut on May 27, 2023, at an event called "Pony Day" that's scheduled to take place at Hyundai's design studio in Seoul, South Korea.

I'm interested to see how dumbed down it will get. Thankfully Hyundai has been better than other brands about sticking to their concept cars... with other brands this would be the concept and the production car would be a rounded CUV.

This is the level of ignition retard it would take to get me into an EV, i am currently in neverEV camp, but this is just plain stoopid, kind of like an sti, so its kewl.

There's already a platform and a design language. If the coming decade proves electrics make market, business, and natural resource sense at the affordable end of the car-buying spectrum, why wouldn't a retail version of the N Vision 74 burst from the chute to run with an electric Ford Mustang, electric Volkswagen Golf, electric Honda Civic, and a potential Nissan Max-Out Convertible?

While we wait for time's answer, we know there's a different special on the way. Hyundai destroyed the Pony Coupe Concept shown at the 1974 Turin Auto Show to help establish the Pony lineup. Memories of the coupe were inspiration for the 45 Concept that became the Ioniq 5, for the Pony EV restomod, and for the N Vision 74 Concept at the eye of the latest storm. To pay proper homage to origins, the automaker has announced it will work with GFG Style, the Turin design house founded by father-and-son designers Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugaro, to re-create the Pony Coupe Concept show car. Last year, Hyundai said the debut was penciled in for this spring. If there's a Pony Day, this will be its prize."

Last year, Hyundai revealed the N Vision 74 concept, a retro-styled coupe that paid tribute to the Giugiaro-designed 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe. Not only was the N Vision 74 concept gorgeous, but it also packed a hydrogen powertrain that made 670 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. We desperately wanted to see it go into production, possibly even with a different powertrain. We heard rumors it might actually happen. Then Hyundai said it’s not happening. But maybe that was also wrong.

Speaking to Top Gear, Luc Donckerwolke, chief creative officer for Hyundai, said, “I hate show business. I hate doing show cars and then — nothing.” And when asked if the N Vision 74 could be put into production, he added, “Absolutely. We are serious about this. This could come into production. We have the platform — it’s a motorsport platform.”

That’s not exactly an official announcement, but at the same time, it leaves the door open for a production N Vision 74. Donckerwolke then went on to add more fuel to the fire, suggesting that upper management was at least interested in a production version since the concept had their blessing from the beginning. “It’s something that came from management,” he told Top Gear. “It’s always good when the management is telling you [to do it]. There is nothing unfeasible about this car. It’s pure. We’re hoping and we’re working and it’s only a matter of the right constellation.”

If Hyundai does ever put the Vision N 74 into production, Donckerwolke said it would be a “limited series.” So you probably won’t ever be able to head down to your local Hyundai dealer and take one for a test drive while your Sonata’s being serviced. But still. It’s a cool car that deserves to be built. Hyundai could use a halo car, and the Vision N 74 should be it. But whether it ever happens or not, we say it’s time for Hyundai to make a decision. Either build it or don’t, but please stop teasing us, Hyundai. This maybe-but-no-but-maybe business is too much for us to handle right now.

if Hyundai made a car with this shape and not all the aero wingdings it would look pretty good. I don't know if it would sell to anyone other than retro curmudgeons, but it's about time someone told the market to **** off. Too many SUVs out there.
