Anyone Using STOCK Headunit & Sub Wiring Harness to Run a Bass Tube or Custom Sub Box
Hi all,
First off, I apologize for posting this in here instead of the Car Audio Forum, but I'm hoping to get some local assistance with this project. I think the internal amp on my WRX's factory, underseat subwoofer went out, so I'm thinking of trying to use the wiring harness to patch in a powered bass tube--i.e. BAZOOKA, or a small 8" or 10" sub box. Of course, none of these units will fit under the seat, so I'll have to extend the wiring harness to the trunk. Is anyone running a similar set-up? If so, would you be so kind as to post pics of your "modified" wiring harness and/or some brief directions on performing the operation? I'm fairly handy but am not very experienced w/car audio and electronics. Thanks in advance, CL [email protected]

Dont be a cheez ball buy a hi/lo converter and a amp kit and run it from behind the deck and power from the battery. If you try to take a short cut and save some money you will most likley pay more in the long run. Forget your first idea!!! trust me

The sub wiring harness is connected to the rear speakers. If you fade the audio all the way to the front of the car you will lose all signal feeding the subwoofer. Really not the brightest design in the world on Subaru's part.
I second what Miguel said. Take the power from the battery and get the feeds for your new sub from the front speakers off the back of the deck. Some of the self powered subs have speaker level inputs which nullifies the need for a speaker level to line level converter (it's built in). Joe Side note... It took me three tries to type "in", I kept typing "int". If I'm not careful I'm going to start ending sentences with semicolons; (that's a geek joke... I know the geeks are laughing cause you've all done it (I know you also nest parentheses too (so there))); |

I did it the quick and cheap way!! Just ran a power cable from the battery to the amp and hooked up the amp speaker wires the rear speakers. It works and sounds good. I am running 2 8's because I didn't want too much weight but wanted more than a Tube. I was going to splice off with the Subaru amp/sub harness but then I thought naw forget it! And hooked it up the way I just said.

Here is my story:
The Requirement - Keep the in-dash CD changer I liked the idea of keeping the changer but didn't want to fork out the cash for the Nakamichi or Eclipse head unit + changer combos. Keeping the factory head unit is also a great way to NOT attract attention from would be thieves. The Solution - The N-7V from DavidNavon.com The N-7V is a 2-channel, full-range speaker level to pre-amp level line output adapter with balanced or common outputs, full transformer isolation, an adjustable 0 to 9.5 volt signal level, and infrasonic filtering. To my surprise the N-7V actually sounds good! I had gone in expecting poor sound as a result of using the speaker level outputs on the factory head unit. About halfway through the install I had the front speakers hooked up to the new amp but had not yet installed the sub. The sound was much better than the factory head unit alone. The N-7V did not hamper frequency response and the added dynamic range and damping capabilities of the amp were immediately apparent. I even had the 80 Hz HPF switched on at the amp in preparation for installing the sub! On Saturday I finished the sub install and I am very happy. Here is the preview... two amps and a fiberglassed sub enclosure hidden in the floor (I have a wagon). And no, I didn't give up my spare tire! Pics and install info are coming soon! |
