Pulled the motor this evening to go through it. It will be getting a very mild build of pistons and bearings to make sure it is reliable.

Make sure everyone likes us on Facebook to see all the pics we will be adding.

Yup...

While Pook unfortunately couldn't go to SEMA this year, I did go, and saw both of the FF 818 cars. I talked for a bit with Jim the project engineer about some aspects of the car. Dave Smith walked up to me and after I showed him some pics of the prototype and Marty's car, he was very impressed.

I am very much looking forward to seeing some of the track 818s and more of the TR42s on a road course at the same time...

Should be fun.

In looking at the 818s at SEMA, I thought the only one worth building was the race model and I found that version very interesting. If I wasn't deep into a project it might have been a good option. I look forward to seeing my first TR42...

PooK's TR-42s > FF 818

Hopefully I'll get the chance to proove this as one of my friends wants to build the 818 and I want the TR-42... We both plan to take them to Autocrosses and Trackdays...

I have not seen the TR-42 close up, but have to say the 818 frames were crude and not the best welds. Prototypes but not great...

You're right about that. Pook and I were both disappointed with the quality of welds on the FF Daytona Coupe. There's one in the shop right now.

I didn't really get a thorough look at the 818. There were people all over it and I was asking more questions than anything else.

I like the looks of the 818. I think its just apples and oranges.
FF uses their frame as a means to hold up a body, Exo's use the frame as point of focus and the body work is secondary...
But man if I had the money and tooling they have! sooo many ideas stuck in my head!

Your work is something beautiful though PooK... My friends are all obsessed with the 818 and personally I don't really see the big deal. I mean the TR-42 is (IMHO) much better in every way. It's like a 4-wheeled motorcycle powered by a Subaru. EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!...

I think part of the excitement of the 818 is the cost. $9,900 + donor = done! No bodywork, prep and paint which traditionally has been a major 'unexpected' cost adder to an advertised expectation.

I'd love something in the middle though. The 818 is too "fullbodied" (for lack of a better term). The traditional EXOs a bit minimalistic.

Maybe something like this old Suzuki concept, but Subaru powered:

Whatcha think Pook? $10K out-da-door?

That weird, Ive been doing some research on the same thing for the same reason! I have a friend who wants a TR but cant clutch because of a knee problem.
Here is what I found on I think the factory five forum.

From the top:

4 speed auto AWD

5 speed manual AWD

4 speed auto FWD

5 speed manual FWD

The half shaft location is basically the same for all versions. The FWD auto looks like it will fit in the same space as a AWD 5 speed, even after the 5 speed has the tail shaft output replaced with a 2WD kit.
At 660mm for the 5 speed with a block off plate an additional 2.5" or 70mm would not be a problem! especially since the shift shaft isn't there. Its just the lower back tube and a stretch on the roll bar braces on the TR.

Sure if you dont mind 1/4 scale
I tried a long time ago to come up with a bolt on body for the TR so you could swap or even add on later but I just dont have the artistic talent to do it on paper...
then there is the cost for the molds...$$$$$

Trying to come up with a roll cage design for an exo is a...uhm...bummer!
Ive given up on the drawings and started using flex muffler tube for a better idea of the "look" any thoughts?
I tried a windshield hoop with connectors to the rear main hoops and it just wasn't right. I'm thinking using side tubes with a front connector for the Halo?

I know what you mean Pook, coming up with an attractive full cage on an open car is tough. I am trying to build my car so it can be a daily driver when warm and also be smart/legal for Pikes Peak. I will be watching your ideas to see if you come up with any better ones...

Maybe it's the camera angles, but I think it would look better if the roof line was parallel to the ground rather than raked forward... And it might help to move the bottom of the "A pillar" forward a bit (or a lot?), to put the pillar at a steeper angle. Maybe have a support bar come down from the top of the A pillar for strength, if necessary...

I like the halo cage idea a lot though.

I tried moving them forward but as you do the upper chassis tubes that the "pillars" must rest on start to converge to the point that the a pillars move into your field of vision... A LOT!
Looking down on this chassis its shaped like an arrow head.
Ill try less rake though and see what that looks like....Thanks!

Ill glance over some current rules and see what I can come up with. Does the Fran currently conform to any class specs?
