Default Question on JDM heads...

I am in the process of purchasing a totaled car that the owner said had a built bottom end/ JDM head and cams and JDM ECU>

I removed the ECU cover on he passenger floorboard and the code on it was AF422 which is a USDM ECU according to ECUtech website. How can I tell if the heads are legit without pulling them. Is there a head code stamped and if so where is it located? Any help would be appreciated.

There is a code on the top of the heads right below the injectors.

USDM 2.0 WRX's are LHS20 and RHS20. The jdm verison 6 heads I have are stamped with the same numbers.

I recently did a version 8 swap for someone and the casting was different but I can't remember the actual numbers.

I found this thread when I type in LHS20 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ighlight=LHS20

make sure you inspect the heads carefully especially look for hairline cracks around the spark plug area. My recent experience searching for a set of used WRX heads i found hairline cracks in a number of heads i had inspected. Ended up buying brand new castings.

I have a set of stock 02 heads that have the crack described above. They had it when I pulled them off at 40k miles. When I pulled them off again at 80k miles they were the exact same size. It probably happened the very first time the car was heat cycled.

The crack does not always mean the head is toast but I can certainly understand people being uncomfortable about it.

The problem I am experiencing is this.. the real reason I am buying the car is that he stated the motor was rebuilt 20,000 miles ago with forged internals. He added JDM heads with a mild port job. My thing is he told me the ECU was JDM to control the AVCS on the heads. So I check the ECU- Non JDM. So now do I believe him about the heads and forged internals. This could be a bone stock 106,000 mile USDM EJ20. My EJ20 is running fine with 112,000 miles but it is my daily driver and I want reliability 1st, power 2nd. So instead of rebuilding one I thought this was a good alternative.... buying one built. My goal now is to verify the heads..to see if they are JDM. From what I have read it looks like I may have to remove them to truely know.

Well if they are at least avcs heads it should be real easy to tell without pulling anything off. Just look for the control solenoids right behind the intake cam gears.

The ecu thing definately sounds shady.

I was told that car was a 2.5L from a local in Wilmington that I don't even know. I was at a store there and the guy walked up to me asking if I was interested. This was after Kelly told me about the car. There are a lot of flaky stories around about this car dude. Be careful.
