Default Sell the XT for STI??

I have owned four Subarus 11 wrx, 06 wrx, 10 Forester XT and now I currently own a 06 Forester XT automatic. I had a jeep wrangler but me and my wife had our first child 3 months ago and needed something a bit bigger then the wrangler so I bought a very clean 1 owner XT. Well the forester xt while being a great car is just so boring in stock form so I have been contemplating buying an 05-07 STI but keeping it stock, I just want something fun to drive to work and around town. My wife made me a deal that if I save 3k then I can go STi shopping, fortunately with my job and few shifts of OT and PT will make that money pretty quickly. So now I find myself with 3k and I have been looking for a clean sti, which I have found to be hard to find. My car payment is next to nothing for the XT and insurance/property tax is also extremely low. So now I am contemplating keeping the XT and putting that 3k into it. Do you think this is a good idea or am I just being anxious??

If you are OK with the 4EAT, then personally I'd stick with the Foz . . . I just traded a '10 FXT for a '13 WRX because I don't care much for the 4EAT and really prefer a full manual. I loved the Foz but really wanted 3 pedals.

If the current gen (or the new '14) FXT was available with a 5MT, however, no question that's what I'd be driving.

the 4eat is ok, its nice when having the baby in the car. i think i just hate driving a stock subaru. my 06 wrx had a big turbo and ppg, the 10 foz was one of the first to be dropped on sti suspension and i had a lot of other stuff done to it. i just feel like a soccer mom in this haha

well...iirc...the last 5mt xt foz was the 08...you could go back a couple years to an at...and they ARE 4.44 gears

i have been driving for 35+ years and have only owned a couple at vehicles...work beaters....and i feel like im just along for the ride with an at...and i dont think a full manual valve body at is gonna happen any time soon unless i lose the use of my left leg and right arm

im currently putting together plans for something 5mt i wanna build up.....

Unless you find something clean or at least honest with known mods and previous mods that have been returned to stock - It is certainly riskier to get the STI. But no risk, no reward.

As far as modifying the XT. I think stage 2 and some suspension mods is the perfect balance for DD and spirited driving or some autoX. It will cost you less than 3K ( go buy something else or pay off debt or put in your kids college savings). Also some nice new rims and summer tires will get you out of soccer mom status.

Plus you know the car is reliable.

I think with 3k in mods on the foz it would be a fun car, but your still stuck with a automatic. IMO I would go for an sti, my nephews love riding with me in my Wrx (15 months and 4 years old) but they also aren't 3 months old. I think you should keep the foz until the kid is just a touch older. Just my opinion.

Since I have had both, I thought I'd chime in here. Between the two, stock STI vs. modified XT, I'd do the modified XT. Way more versatile for family life. I wouldn't stop at $3K tho. I'd shoot for around $5K and start with the suspension to get it to handle like you sound like you want it to. Add wheels and tires. Add Stage 2 power. Then add better brake pads and lines. = Ultimate sleeper/baby hauler. My .02

Why'd they have to kill the 5MT in the FXT?

So, how realistic is it you'd actually keep the 05-07 STI stock? I think you should look for a manual XT to mod. Then you'd still have low insurance, soccer mom versatility, a cool sleeper, and lots of fun to drive. It'd be much easier to find a manual XT than an unmolested STI.

Have you not seen the trend in the US that manual transmission cars are largely going away? In Germany, you get in a taxi and it's got a tiny diesel and a manual. Rent a car in Scotland and it'll have a manual if you don't specify an automatic. What's left today that we can even buy as a manual anymore?

We've become a country of the "brogham". We want a couch on wheels.

An MT is really only for performance or racing in passenger cars (trucks are different). AT is really for DD, comfort, etc. There are more of the latter because the majority of people use their car for DD. While sports car enthusiasts are prevalent, its nothing compared to overall car sales.

If MPG was better with AT, Europe would have far more ATs. MT gets better MPG and gas is expensive over there.

Yes. Dual clutch dsg's found in the highest of high performance cars were made for a comfortable DD.

Your generalizations are pretty skewed, and not entirely accurate.

I agree that generilizations are rarely entirely accurate. I have worked for large corporations my whole life and decisions usually are made based upon making money first and all other issues second. Therefore, it's pretty simple, if they make more money selling AT than MT, then MT will lose. This trend is obvious in the USA and I believe it will spread to other places as well. It's only a matter of time. The good thing is that the classic car industry will always keep MT alive.

I think it's a valid point (link) - it costs money to offer more than one transmission option. If it doesn't make money, they pull the option. People in the US don't want manuals...is there something I'm missing?

M response had nothing to do with the economics issues of dropping MT's, but the fact people think its because "Americans are lazy".

Dual clutch dsg's are far superior to most (if not all) manual transmissions. There is a reason near every supercar uses them.

I didn't say Americans are lazy, that's just what you inferred. I didn't think my statement would be interpreted that way; all I meant to imply was that manuals aren't being offered because Americans, in general, don't drive them. I do not attempt to explain the whys and wherefores of this phenomenon. It would take too much energy, and I have a chronic lack of energy due to my inability to breathe through my nose.

us citizens are, without a doubt, lazy and getting worse every day

subaru is a very small auto manufacturer...they offer what the plodding, bleeting masses want

and subaru has no $$$ to put dsg boxes in anything....keep dreaming

and who gives a flyin rats ass WHAT the **** they put in ANY 'super car'??

aint no subaru supercar......ever...or ever will be

sheeplemobiles they are become....that's that

He was just using the fact that supercars use advanced automatic dual-clutch transmissions to support his point that these transmissions are superior to manuals. I know that some relatively low-priced cars like the GTI use DSGs. From what I've seen, the VW DSG gets rave reviews...but I'm certainly not experienced in that area.
