Talking Sighting on I-90 heading Westbound

Around 5:00pm on the I-90 bridge, you were in a white 2001 Legacy GT, tinted windows, pretty much stock from the outside. Me, Black '98 Legacy GT with Apexi Exhaust. Same exit, off Madison Street. Raised a thumbs up through the sun roof, but no response...

Actually, I was making a big guess. 2000 was model face lift, so.... no secret there.

However, I do notice slight differences with the 1998 and 1999. Maybe it's just my eyes... Sonny, where's my trifocals?

Hey Crazy Ken,

The fact that you have a rusting muffler tells me you didn't get the stainless Stromung. I am also assuming you just got the muffler, so you're using the original pipe from the cat. Since the APEXi N1 is stainless, you may have a difficult time installing it since they are two different compounds, that is, if you're just welding the muffler. But if you're going for the all-out cat back exhaust, you should be okay. I am not sure if they have one for the Legacy application though. I have the Cat-back Megaphone Dunk Series, and it was originally for the Legacy wagon, so I had to have my tip shortened. Also, since it was for a wagon, the pipes were longer between the cat and muffler, so the bend of the pipes don't really fit flush with the body of the car, so I get some rattling on occation. Also, my ground clearance is a little lower than it should... So I can't lower the car. If I did, I will be scraping like no tomorrow, and when stainless gets hot, it gets brittle, and that's when you start having problems. I think it's harder to repair stainless than Aluminum pipes.

Check around and see. I think some muffler installation places can do some custom stuff for Stainless applications. That way, you can get the N1 muffler (the whole exhaust system will cost you around $800, where as the muffler will be ~$400) I also think APEXi has a Universal muffler too. Let me look into it, and I'll let ya know.

Sheesh! 400 or a silencer?

Repairs to SS is not that hard.
SS gets brittle at VERY high temps, so I don't think you have that much of a problem. Aluminized steel (sometimes refered to as Galvalume) si a little more forgiving, but you weigh in more, and it will eventually rust - not as soon, but it will.

Apexboy, your exhaust seems fine. I was looking at it the other night, and your lowest point of the pipe is right in like with the axle. You could prolly lower it, but not so low that you'd call it "slammed" (so, just enough to close up the wheel-to-fender gap). I'd get the antiroll bars beofre the suspension - for control, and for the betterment of the joys to follow.

Cheers!
