2002 wrx heater not blowing hot air
Hey guys,
Been working on my Gfs bug eye. The car isnt blowing hot air when on the heat setting. Prior to doing anything the car warms up perfectly fine and did not over heat. I've searched around and ended up doing a few things. Recently replaced the thermostat with a new oem one and did a coolant flush and bleed. Still no luck. Car is acting exactly like it was prior to doing this work. I checked the radiator hoses and the heat core hoses (next to the firewall) and they were hot. I am not sure what my next steps are? I searched around and some people mentioned maybe the actual dial that controls the temperature was detached, but when i turn it to cold, it blows cold air. any ideas? Thanks!

Did you check to see if the heater core is clogged?

Some people take it out and try to run a hose through it. I guess you can disconnect both ends and try to run water through it that way.
Also you can try disconnecting the return line to see if there is flow. Or at least squeeze the return line to see if it's getting coolant returned. Did you also air out the coolant system correctly? Last edited by SubbieNoob; 11-28-2016 at 12:57 PM. |

I hope i bled the system correctly.
I didnt get a chance to check the heater core. she took her car into to get the ball joints replaced and they did an inspection of the cooling system. they pressurized it to check for leaks and it passed, they said the car was blowing HOT HOT air. I checked, new symptom, now the car does EVENTUALLY blow hot air. It just takes honestly FOREVER. What could be causing this? Air in the system? Should i try to bleed it again? |

BUMP,
I ended up buying a no spill funnel, and burped the system again. Still taking forever to get hot air. Also, when i let the car sit over night, the hose that goes from the top of the radiator to the engine block is flat (like it is under vacuum) Ideas? |

1. What is the level of coolant in the overflow tank next to the radiator?
2. What is the level of coolant in the reservoir tank next to the turbo? 3. What degree thermostat was installed? If the heater core hoses are hot, and hot air is not coming out of the vents when set to HOT, then it sounds as if you have a heater core blockage. This could simply be an air block from not properly burping the cooling system |

1. it is at its max level 2. When I burp the system it was at its max. looking at it the next day the coolant level drops but you can still see it in the tank. 3. OEM thermostat. I belive its 167? |

Thermostat should be 192 IIRC ( without looking it up )
167, if that is what you really put in, will not let the engine warm up properly before the thermostat opens. Really bad in the winter when you want heat in the car How low in the tank are we talking? Which tank? The reservoir tank should be full when COLD. The overflow tank should be between the COLD and HOT markings on the side of the tank when the engine is warmed up, so in the middle, more or less |

It is the OEM thermostat so which ever temp that operates at. Bought it at the dealership. The top reservoir tank near the turbo is always lower when I open it when the car is cold (maybe about an inch or 1.5 inches low) I have to double check to see where the overflow tank is at. I did notice on my 6 hr round trip to Chicago last night that the heat will work very well on fan settings 4, maybe sometimes on 3. fan seeings 1 and 2 were cold. What could it be? |

While an inch doesn't sound low, your reservoir tank is low.
If that is low, I'm guessing your overflow tank is empty. You should not have either condition. Add coolant to top off reservoir tank. Add coolant to overflow tank to at least the lower mark on the overflow tank. You really want that @ the lower mark when COLD. It gives room for the coolant to expand when it gets hot so it doesn't overflow See what happens next. |

Burping the system

I’m having the same problem I’m burping the system at the radiator cap not the expansion do you think that’s why it’s over heating and my heater is blowing cold air? Cause there’s air in the system because cause of the expansion tank and only filling it up at the radiator cap But I have EJ205 JDM motor in my 2002 Wrx I did the iwire AVCS kit and new radiator, hoses I already replaced the thermostat, new ac Compressor Thanks |

Never had any issues being Canadian and driving in -40. But there are days these cars take longer to warm up then others. And now on my 5th, they all do they're own thing in terms of getting up to temp.
