Angry Holy Hell My Gas Mileage Sucks!

With mostly highway driving and the random city style drive here and there, my car is averaging 14 mpg. It is a 1997 Legacy L sedan with the wonderfully underpowered 137 hp engine. Now I admit that I may drive the car hard to get the power to flow with traffic but 14 mpg is pretty insane by all accounts. Are there any ideas on how to fix this problem?

I suggest a tune up if you haven't done that in a while. In my 99 RS when my first O2 sensor went bad my MPG's really suffered. A new one fixed it right up.

Now that you mention it... My AT OIL TEMP light flashes on the guage cluster everytime I start the car for 15 seconds... I asked my father and he said it didn't mean anything though...

That usually doesn't mean much, if it goes away fairly quickly (I think 15 seconds is pushing the definition of 'quickly' though)...

but if your MPG is that low, I'd go get it checked out.

yeah... Well, I was going to just run it to death because hopefully by August I will have enough finances to buy a 2005 Legacy or better. In the mean time, I just don't know how much longer I can foot these $531/month gas bills...

I would also check for a dragging brake caliper. Search in this forum and I believe the brake/suspension forum for a how to.

I have covered this before.
