I run a SRI right now but only because my FMIC doesn't allow for a CAI and I haven't bothered to have any custom intercooler piping made up to correct for that.

So basically the picks you want to make are basically a CAI or a SRI with a heatshield.
Be prepared, noob question: How would I know if my FMIC would allow for CAI?

No offense, but that doesn't help us at all. We need to know exactly which one it is. However, almost (ALMOST) any FMIC can accomodate a CAI, but it may have to be custom-made.

I have the AVO FMIC, and any CAI for it would have to be custom (even then I'm not sure it would be possible).

Thats funny because I thought the same thing when I saw that he said it was a HUGE FMIC. It's cool but doesn't help me learn about it. Same with the turbo back, for whatever reason it only went to the midpipe and had nothing from the axle back when I got it. Needless to say it was very loud and made people turn their heads even more.

I will see what I can find out though. Thanks to you all for the advice.

EDIT: I talked to the guy's at KAS and they said that it looks like an ESS FMIC but not 100% sure.

That's one of the many generic TurboXS FMIC replicas. No, you cannot run a CAI with that piping. And it's installed wrong because it should have fit without having to cut the foglights out.

Ah well that sucks. In any case my friend and I are going to patch the holes where they cut the fogs out.

So it looks like its SPT piping with an HKS filter so I might just get a better filter and stick it on and potentially make a heat shield for it.

Hey all,

So I have a 4" TurboXS bellmouth DP, 3" exhaust from there back, Cobb SRI, and I have an OS tune from a local guy scheduled for august 8th. I plan to have a gauge cluster installed by then: AFR, boost, and oil pressure. I'm also wanting to install an MBC to turn the boost up. My 06 WRX feels slow as hell haha. What kind of boost is recommended for my stock turbo that will be quicker, more efficient, yet still not too bad for the car. Also what kind of power am I expecting from these mods?

If you are just going to run 93 pump gas, with no intercooler upgrade (which the 06 WRX DESPERATELY needs), I would run no more than 17PSI. With an STI TMIC 19PSI sounds like a nice round number, as long as you are tuned for it.

Many people will tell you an MBC is evil and will blow your car up. It can, UNLESS you tune for it.

If you get the MBC, then have the car tuned for the new higher boost level, it will be perfectly safe. Use a GOOD mbc, I highly recommend Hallman.

Also, if the AFR gauge you have is not a wideband, take it out and sell it. It is completely useless, 100%, tells you NOTHING. It simply cant read where you need to be. When it says full rich, you can be DANGEROUSLY LEAN.

So a noon question to elaborate on your replies (thank you by the way)... What is the difference between a wideband and an AFR gauge? I actually was actually thinking about 18 lbs with an STi TMIC. is it really necessary to replace the stock turbo for what I'm going for? I feel like I should stick with what I've mentioned for now. If I'm gonna go FMIC, new turbo, fuel, etc... I should do all of that at once at a later time. I don't want to blow too much money on performance and not be able to replace my 5 sp when it blows (I've got a stage 3 BS clutch that came with the car)

1. HP at the WHEELS (whp) or hp at the CRANK (chp)? ~300whp

2. What type of dyno are you going to be shooting for this number on? Not sure...I think I'm gonna get it tuned at Andrewtech or DPS.

3. If possible, tell us what shop it is. Someone may know how high or low that particular dyno reads. DPS or Andrewtech

4. Where do you live? If not a well known city, what is the elevation?
Maryland

5. What kind of gas will you be using? (octane level)
93 Octane

6. Are you opposed to a FMIC?
Eh...if I can hit 300whp without it, I rather stay TMIC.

7. It's an DD Auto.

Current Upgrades:
Perrin Uppipe, Perrin Downpipe, Cobb AP2 (on the way), Cobb Intake (on the way)

Fill out your profile. We need to know model and year. Also, call the shop you are getting tuned at and ask. They will have a much better idea than we will.

Andrewtech's dyno is just like TurboXS's dyno (it may actually be the same dyno, Im not sure) It reads fairly high.

You can do 300whp on their dyno with an IHI turbo on 93 octane with a good intercooler and 22 or so PSI. MUCH easier if its a 2.5L car. The 2.5L cars hit 300whp without much more than stage 2

If you are on a 2.0L, go with an EVOIII-16G and a GOOD tmic. This means turboXS or better. No ebay, xCC, godspeed, $400 tmic.

If you are on an STI, go with a full turboback, an up pipe, ported/polished exh manifold and call it a day.

If its a 2.5L WRX, do the same, but go to an IHI turbo.

Andrewtech does not have a dyno nor do they tune (though there is someone who knows how to tune there). They will send you to TurboXS, which is down the street from them. [edit: Dave beat me to it]

DPS does not have a dyno either from what I remember.

TurboXS got back to me and listed the parts.

Engine Managemnt
Full TurbobackExhaust
Intake
550cc Injectors
Walbro Fuel Pump
18g Turbo
Upgraded Top Mount Intercooler

does that sound about right? or is it a bit overkill (i think just the fuel pump would be fine, i have access to 93 gas)....and I prolly need to reinforce/upgrade my tranny. Valvebody, cooler, (one other thing...maybe the clutchpacks themselves?)

Guys,

I am looking at picking up a 2004 WRX from a member off this board. Here are some of the mods that he has listed:

Motor & exhaust:
-Stock turbo 2.0L
-godspeed FMIC kit
-tial bov
-forge boost controller
-perrin inlet hose
-k&n cold air
-4" downpipe to full 3" hks hi-power. No cats no o2's. (i have the stock exhaust to go with car)

He claims to have made 235whp 240wtq on 17psi. I dont know what type of dyno he used but he is located in CT.

I live in FL where we dont have emissions and 93 oct fuel. I will be dyno'ing at a place called AWD Motorsports because they are one of the few places in my area with a 4WD Dyno Jet dyno.

I would like to get 350 horsepower on a daily driven car with reliability. I am traditionally a Honda guy and have been for more than 8 years but as my life has it I have a family now and in need of a 4 door car. I really enjoy the messaging that Subaru has with safety and reliability so thats why I choose to go this route.

So with all that being said... Any help, would help immensely.

Thank,
Phil

If they recommend it it's not overkill. They are experts when it comes to knowing what it takes to make xx amount of hp on their dyno. Go with what they say.

Are you wanting 350whp or crank hp? 350chp would be pretty easy to do reliably. 350whp is going to take a lot of work to make it reliable.

Also, if you have a budget for the build, that would be helpful to know as well.

I am looking for 350whp. I do have a budget of about 3500 to get there with the mods that are already on the car.

Thanks,

235 whp is very plausible for that setup if it's tuned (did he say?). That FMIC is a bit out of place and could be bit detrimental to driving performance. If you're looking for 350 whp, good luck with your reliability goal without building your engine and transmission. If you meant 350 chp (275 whp), assuming the car doesn't have high mileage amd wasn't abused (in general the engine being in good shape), easily done.

I am looking for 350whp. I was reading in the FAQ's and they said that 400whp was the point where these motors need to be built and thats why I thought 350whp would be fine.

The car has a V.8 STI 6 speed tranny in it now.
