Default HELP! What is this? How did it happen? How do I fix it?

I'll first start by saying that my vocabulary surrounding the transmission and driveline is weak. To make up for that I have provided pictures.

I drive a 1999 2.5RS. I was underneath my car checking for exhaust leaks and noticed this brown ooze coming out from where the axle inserts into the transmission. I don't know the exact words to describe it. The axle pictured is my driver side. I don't see any tears on my CV boot, or on the green thing (?).

Here it is from directly underneath it:

Here's an offset underneath shot:

Here's the best I could do for a side shot:

And a little closer:

What is it?
Is it normal for this to happen (I have 110k)?
Is this something I can fix on my own w/ hand tools?
If so, how? What parts will I need to replace?

If not, what's the average labor and parts cost.

Thanks for being patient. I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

Not normal. See wrinkleboi's recent thread on replacing axle seals.

this is not an axle seal issue, but rather the inner cup of the DOJ leaking grease out. there is a different grease available from subaru as well as an additional seal that can be installed on the end of the DOJ (dual offset joint) between the doj & the axle seal to repair this problem. see your local dealership to obtain these parts--i can get you the part #'s if you need, but i won't be back @ my shop until tues. hope this helps.

Subetek,

Thanks! I would really appreciate it if you could provide me w/ the part #'s when you get a chance.

In the meantime I will start reading up on the dual offset joint (DOJ).

And lastly, is this something that an amateur can do on his own?

Thanks,
-al
