HELP! What is this? How did it happen? How do I fix it?
I'll first start by saying that my vocabulary surrounding the transmission and driveline is weak. To make up for that I have provided pictures.
I drive a 1999 2.5RS. I was underneath my car checking for exhaust leaks and noticed this brown ooze coming out from where the axle inserts into the transmission. I don't know the exact words to describe it. The axle pictured is my driver side. I don't see any tears on my CV boot, or on the green thing (?). Here it is from directly underneath it: Here's an offset underneath shot: Here's the best I could do for a side shot: And a little closer: What is it? Is it normal for this to happen (I have 110k)? Is this something I can fix on my own w/ hand tools? If so, how? What parts will I need to replace? If not, what's the average labor and parts cost. Thanks for being patient. I'd appreciate all the help I can get. -al

Not normal. See wrinkleboi's recent thread on replacing axle seals.

this is not an axle seal issue, but rather the inner cup of the DOJ leaking grease out. there is a different grease available from subaru as well as an additional seal that can be installed on the end of the DOJ (dual offset joint) between the doj & the axle seal to repair this problem. see your local dealership to obtain these parts--i can get you the part #'s if you need, but i won't be back @ my shop until tues. hope this helps.

Subetek,
Thanks! I would really appreciate it if you could provide me w/ the part #'s when you get a chance. In the meantime I will start reading up on the dual offset joint (DOJ). And lastly, is this something that an amateur can do on his own? Thanks, -al |
