how come my LED turn signal bulbs are barfing on my '00 RS?
Just bought two LED 1156 bulbs for my front bumper turn signals. It just won't work. It works fine on my friend's car, so I don't know what's wrong with my car. The regular bulbs work fine...
Can anyone help?

do you mean you put your bulbs in your friends car and they work? Does he also have an RS?

my friend has a Mazda, and he also uses 1156 bulbs. I first thought I confused a 1157 with a 1156, but the 1157 bulb won't fit into a 1156 socket. When the bulb is put into the Mazda, it works fine.

because there is not enough amperage(their resistance is too high) to fire them. get rid of them they are junk.

I think it has something to do with Subaru using a switched ground setup. LED's can only work with proper polarity, and if you send power through them the wrong way it burns them up eventually. I tried these in my sidemarkers, which I have wired as blinkers, and the bulbs only worked for a week or so before they started to go. Mulder will know for sure, if he reads this.

well the new 168/194 bulbs out have a diode that doesn't allow them to work if polarity is reversed...hence you have to flip them around for those to work...but it's impossible for the front bulbs to get reversed...

All LED's have(are) a diode (LED = Light Emitting Diode). I believe the reason the polarity gets reversed in the turn signal bulbs is not cause you put the bulb in the wrong way, but because the switched negative ground setup that Subaru uses sends power through the circuit in both directions, which will fry the LEDs over time.

anyway to change the polarity of the system to an un-switched system? anyone know if they have always used this type of system?

I'm sure there is, but it would involve a lot of intensive rewiring, you could forget about any warranty on your electrical system, and it really doesn't seem worth it just to have LED turn signal bulbs. I put the Philips Silvervision bulbs in my car and removed the orange cover in the headlight assembly. They are silver when off, but still blink orange when on. They work fine for me and look better than having an orange bulb.

I'm not sure how long Subaru has used this setup, and I don't know why they do. Other car manufacturers seem to be doing fine with regular positive switched circuits.

It seems only the headlight circuit has switched ground connections, although if that changed for '02, it may answer my question about the side marker mod in another thread (and the mod does reverse the polarity for the side markers depending on whether the light switch is on or off).
Add: switched ground only for headlights. Last edited by avk; 02-06-2003 at 12:27 PM. |

Just an update. I switched polarities on the front turn signals and they are working fine right now. I'll update again should the LED's fail.
