(of course, i'm probably overthinking this and minor tweaks in my driving habits may result in no improved mileage and maybe worse!)

I can beat the CVT cruise control by really working at it and manually shifting, but then I am no longer driving "normally" and have to focus too much on tiny adjustments because sometimes manually shifting is worse. A good example of this is on some hills where you could just keep it in 6 and glide up the hill while losing 3 MPH, but letting the car cruise would ramp up the RPMs. There seems to be a very fine line between hills that works on, and hills where would would have been doing better if the car was in D-mode. |

i came to develop, what i thought were pretty good habits with my 5spd, and actually have been able to really optimize my driving when i occasionally drive my wife's prius...but this impreza seems to behave differently than the prius which i guess shouldn't come as a surprise. |

I found that on low rolling hills, keeping it in 6th is great. It really helped keep the mpg up. On steeper, short hills, bliping it into 5th manually to bring the speed up a few was also better than being in drive where sometimes it would even drop into 4th and really drink the gas.
On nearly flat surfaces, or minor grade changes, keeping it in drive was the best option. If you are on a road that won't make the car change gears, drive and cruise control is the best combination. |

Commuting, beach trip 50/50 city/hwy TripA: 376.2 avg mph: 41 avg mpg: 30.0 Actual: Gallons: 13.32 MPG: 28.24 TripB: 2466 avg mph: 27 avg mpg: 29.1 I don't know if it was the fuel or what but the MPG numbers on the dash seemed extra low this trip. Beach trip was 2 hours one way 70-75 mph and usually hovering around 30 mpg with cruise control on level to mildly hilly terrain in 75 degree clear weather. I can't find any ethanol blend info on any pumps here in NC. |

Just as an aside, I noticed on fuely that the 2012 Impreza and Focus were, on average, 2 MPG away from each other, and seeing as the sticker is pretty much 2 MPG off of each other, this makes sense. But also means that it would seem the Impreza is not really that far off the numbers as people think it is.

on the other hand, if you look at the Honda Civic which i think is 31/38 (?), it's getting much better mileage overall. |

This is in arkansas by the way. It usually gets pretty warm here and is almost always very humid. Also this fill up was the second time my calculated was higher than the dash. I got 27.72 mpg and the dash said 27.4. Maybe it is getting better? Anyone else get a higher mpg than the dash reads? |

I haven't ever had it over-read on the gauge, except if I recall the very first fill I did. Mine is typically 1.5-2mpg on the high side, or about 5%. I also did a drive with my handheld GPS to see how close the distance traveled on the odometer was to actual distance traveled and it was low by almost 2% for my car, sport premium/stock tires (i.e. the car says 100 miles traveled when actual true distance is 102 miles). With my last 7 tanks over or close to 30mpg (last one was 31.4 best so far) I'm pretty happy so far. |

In California all gas is 87 89 91 Subaru recommends using 93 but since we can't get that in California 91 is fine or you can mix with 100 race gas which is 8.99 a gal

Dude, you know this is a 2012 Impreza (non-WRX non-STI) thread right? I supposed the OP could have been a bit clearer on the thread title. Thread was created to discuss some of the folks' concern with the new Impreza's fuel efficiency. Just FYI...

My wife is considering an xv to replace her crv. She really likes my imp but wants the higher ride of a cuv.
So yesterday when I got gas, I had to make a trip home and back to work, pretty much my commute minus 1 mile. I showed 37.5 mpg on the dash after that trip when I normally get 26. The mpgs on this thing are crazy... |

I think they could have put the same 2.5fb from the Legacy in and it would have had that extra oomph and in the real world I doubt there would be much of a fuel mileage penalty. You really have to gramma drive this car to get good mpg's, which I usually do. But as soon as you get on it any the fuel mileage goes right out the window. True of any car. But considering how well the OB loaner with a 2.5fb did on gas when I had it, I feel like they should have left the 2.5 un-sleeved and let us have the same hp as the earlier gen, with a lighter, better chassis. Juat my 2¢
I still like my 2.0 I posted that somewhere else but felt it was better posted here. |

Devo, my wife drives one of these. We brought it to a meet one time, you must not have been there. We are very happy with it. If you want let me know when you are coming to a meet and we can bring it.

Picked-up my Sport Premium CVT 4/20 in Charlotte, drove it 200 miles back home and averaged 34.1 mpg according to the computer. I was in heavy traffic about :45 minutes and drove at various interstate speeds. After driving to work two days my average is 28.1 according to the computer, I warm it up until the blue light goes off and go on my way. So far I am pleased.

Have you driven a new Legacy or OB? They do darned near as well in real driving. Just saying...
Out of all the new Subarus I've driven I really do like the Impreza the best. The car definitely isn't perfect but its better than the competitors in my opinion. |
