The car was definitely warm and traffic was lighter. I wish I could get that mileage all the time!

I bought my wife a '12 OB w/CVT with that 2.5, and she's avging 26 MPG, with one high of 29. The car is dangerously SLOW-seriously. I'm getting 29 avg, with a 32.5 high. The last two tanks, I've been driving it hard and fast, and am down to 28. So I'm getting 12% better mileage in a MUCH faster car. I wish I was getting 40 mpg, but I wouldn't trade the Imp for any other car out there. Well, that's not true... If someone bought me a newer 911, I'd pay for gas and ins....

The Legacy non-turbo 4 cyl engine is not the FB25, it has a EJ253. Completely different motor. The Forester has the FB25. The FB is the newer more advanced engine.

The '13 Legacy and Outback will have the FB engine, though...

Well there you go. I'll bet theres a 2.5 available in some sort of impreza in 2013 too.
My OB loaner was heavy but I got great mileage out of it while I had it.

I just picked up my car on Monday. Sport Limited with everything.

My first commute was yesterday, and my second today. It's 9.5 miles each way. I measured my morning commute on both days. Same weather, humidity, time of day, traffic. In fact I hit all the same lights and also drove pretty much the same way both mornings. My commute is mixed with traffic lights on both ends and some smooth sailing in between. I reset the trip A each morning.

Yesterday I averaged 27mpg. Today, 33mpg. The only difference I noticed? I warmed up the car this morning till the blue light on the dash went off. Is this conclusive proof that this is what rendered better mpgs? No. Is it likely? Yeah I suppose. Did I actually save gas in the end? I reset the trip A as soon as I turned the car on both mornings. But I don't know if the mpg calc starts before you move for the first time. Both mornings it started off with the avg mpg reading "- - -".

The computer doesn't begin calculating until 1 mile after a reset.

This is correct.

Frozen - try the same 2 day test, first day reset, drive without warm-up and then 2nd day warm up but no reset - my guess would be there will be a decrease in the overall mpg, not an increase.

It starts calculating from the reset, but it doesn't have enough data to display any calculations until the 1 mile mark. That first mile usage is still part of the overall calculations for that trip though.

Anybody using a Scangauge or Ultraguage? It will give you a re-settable readout of fuel used and make it very easy to see the difference between warm-up vs driving off cold.

My Silverado had that. It would be a nice upgrade to the Suby and just a matter of programming. It also comes in handy to figure witch route uses less fuel.

first, congrats!

i agree with others about how the trip computer works...

i guess your finding makes sense although i hate the idea of leaving the car running in my garage to get things warmed up to save some fuel consumption. if the car is efficient at idle and only eating up tons of fuel while driving to do some PZEV restrictions, then your numbers would fit that model.

btw, in my warm climate, the blue light goes off within 0.5mi of my house. my car is still inefficient for quite a while more. i wish we had a real temp gauge or they had added a another wrinkle to the discrete gauge. how about solid blue for cold, blinking blue for warming up, no light for normal temp, blinking for over norm, solid red for overheat?...

Ok, I have to ask this, and don't fault me for it. What would a car be doing burning more fuel to meet PZEV standards? I just don't understand how that would work, as I would think using more fuel would cause more waste.

I don't know

Just heard that suggested here.

Yet, I can sort of rationalize it. More fuel consumption doesn't mean higher emissions (except for CO2).

It is burning more fuel to heat up the catalytic converter faster to reach the point of cleaner emissions. Also the engine operates more efficiently and burns fuel better when it reaches operating temp. With a cold cat and a cold engine block, there is a lot of pollution coming out the tailpipe.

I don't think it burns more fuel at startup. I think it runs leaner (less fuel) which heats up the catalytic converters quicker.

Sorry, I mean when the car was driving, not idling.

Hi all, newbie here and haven't even bought my Imp yet. Just sold my '88 GL to help get me there. I haven't seen anyone posting anything about using the engine block heater over night to help keep the water temp up. This is one of the option I plan on getting on my order? Wouldn't it seem to assist in getting the engine up to normal operating temp..

I don't live in a region that a heater is necessary but I would assume they are only designed to keep the block warm enough to keep the fluids from freezing. Not to keep it near operating temp.

I've never tried it, but some Prius owners have used a block heater to improve mileage. It won't keep the engine at operating temperature, but I would expect it to shorten the warmup time.

In the end, though, it might not save any money... if you try it, do the math to make sure the improved mileage isn't offset by the electricity costs. Also, put the block heater on a timer - unless you're some place where you actually need the block heater to start the engine, you aren't going to need it heating all night, just an hour or two before you plan to leave. (Or maybe longer, you'll have to experiment...)

I was thinking that too. I garage my car (temps probably 40s even in winter) but still experience the same long engine warm up seemingly regardless of ambient temperature.

Just FYI, Subaru has stopped accepting orders on any 2012 car.

Just for giggles: http://autos.yahoo.com/news/5-small-...ge.html?page=5

STI is the worst small car for gas mileage, so they tell you to get a Sport Premium instead....

Apples and Oranges?

Every car listed is apples to oranges. What, you mean I bought this sporty turbo VW golf when they have a frugal TDI diesel available?! There is an econobox alternative to the Lancer EVO?! Good God that is about the dumbest article I have read in a long time.
