Default Oval "Holes" of varying depth on Direzza Z1 SS Center Strip?

Ive noticed on mine and all other Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, along the center tread strip, there are 4 sets, 3 holes each, varying depth. What are these for?

2nd tire from top, 2 sets are visible, 3rd tire from top, 1 set is visible.

Pretty visible here

They look like tread depth holes. Stick something in them, they should be differing depths.

Correct. All 3 are different depths. They are to see how much depth you have left.

For what purpose, though? Its much easier to measure thread depth in the wide tread voids than those tiny holes.

They are, of varying depths.

No, but since those aren't labeled it's easier to measure than it is to find your tire owners manual and look it up.

I like the nokian ones, they have the number of millimeters of tread left stamped in the tire in a similar manner - the largest number showing is the amount of tread you have left.

i guess the Dunlop people have ASSumed that the idiots buying these tires are smart enough to figure it out without using any tire owners manual

I'm with Scotty.

3 holes = more than 3/4 tread
2 holes = more than 1/2 tread
1 hole = more than 1/4 tread
0 holes = buy new tires.
