Will it play them? Formatting MP3s for my new 05 2.5GT Limited

Hi Y'all,
Anyone know if this stereo really will play my MP3s? What does the manual mean by "supported File Systems...Joliet, Romeo, etc..." That's not the format of the mp3's, it's something else...Is it simply that a disk burned from a computer using Windows operating system won't work for proprietary reasons, (Bill Gates wanted to make money or not give rights to the format er somethin'?) Is there a program that deals directly with mp3 formats someone can reccomend? - should I be doing it in a music program on a windows computer, using Reason, or Soundforge, or is it a CD burning application like Nero, or whatever? I'd love to have hours of music on on disk.
Maybe my stereo is not the one set up for mp3s, seeing as how it doesn't have the steering wheel controls, and is therefore, not the tippy-top of the line unit.Any help is appreciated!

Oh, I should say,
I tried a bunch of disks with differently formatted mp3s on them...the tracks played in the car, but were silent except a quick and quiet thud at the beginning of the track. That's what gave me hope...Just gotta find the right format?

Joliet/Romeo are are CDROm formats. The standard, ISO9660, doesn't support long file names, so Joliet and Romeo are extensions that do support file names longer than 12 characters.

The absolute most compatible MP3 will be one recorded using CBR at 128kbps and 44.1kHz sample rate. CDex is a good windows app for this.

ASSUMING your stereo does support MP3s, give that a try.

Thanks! I'll check it out...I suppose only certain burning programs allow you to choose the bps/sample rate.

Its not the burning program that lets you choose sampling rate/data rate, its the MP3 encoder that you use.

if you have a factory head unit in your LGT, it DOES NOT play MP3's

It will run the tracks, but they will be silence, as you have experienced.
"supported File Systems...Joliet, Romeo, etc..." is just the CD format, not the file format. There is no way to make your factory head unit play the MP3 files unless you convert them to CD audio files, which are not MP3's and take up the normal amount of room on a CD as a regular audio CD.
