Default Sub Mini SUV Jeep Using FIAT 500 Platform

Could borrow the platform from the Fiat 500.

While Jeep is hard at work preparing new big SUVs such as the Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer and the China-only Grand Commander to add at the top of the food chain, the company is also plotting a new entry-level model. Rumors of a sub-Renegade model have been circulating on the World Wide Web for quite some time and Jeep’s boss hinted during the Geneva Motor Show it will actually happen.

Mike Manley suggested a pint-sized SUV represents a solid business case and we will likely have to wait until June for an official announcement. Why June in particular? Because that’s the month when Jeep will present its new five-year plan, which will likely include the petite SUV set to boast the off-road credentials you would come to expect from a Jeep.

The go-anywhere capability was actually one of the main obstacles Jeep had to overcome as implementing the necessary hardware into a smaller vehicle proved to be quite tricky, but Manley is confident the model will live up to the badge: “That’s one piece of the proposal that we are now very comfortable with.”

Likely to be based on the same platform as the Fiat 500 and Panda, the yet-unnamed Jeep is slated to be built in Europe as a nearly global model, but has very little chances of being sold in the United States. FCA’s Pomigliano plant in Naples, Italy will probably serve as the birthplace for the tiny Jeep, though it’s too soon to say when assembly is programmed to begin.

Also during the Geneva Motor Show where Jeep unveiled the Euro flavors of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, Manley announced the plug-in hybrid Wrangler is scheduled to reach the old continent. In the U.S., the partially electrified Wrangler will go on sale for the 2020 model year.

Default Jeep confirms new entry-level model to sit below Renegade

Jeep confirms new entry-level model to sit below Renegade
Priced from around £15,000, the new compact model would become the entry point to the Jeep range

A new small Jeep model to sit below the Renegade has been confirmed by brand CEO Mike Manley.

The compact-sized Jeep will launch by 2022 and will become the entry point into the Jeep range. It will be priced below the Renegade, suggesting a starting price of around £15,000.

The confirmation of the model, which was scooped by Autocar earlier this year, comes as part of a broader five-year strategy announced today.

It includes four electric models and 10 plug-in hybrids by 2022. A Wrangler pick-up and a Grand Wagonner, the latter of which was first confirmed in 2012, will also arrive by 2022.

Manley told Autocar in March: “A smaller car than the Renegade is very interesting to us and we are actively looking at the project now.” Clearly, that decision has now been made, which is not surprising giving the rapid growth of compact SUVs worldwide. It will be particularly important for its European success which has been struggling recently.

“We’ve seen the general move in Europe towards smaller SUVs, and there could also be a market in Latin America,” added Manley.

The new car is unlikely to be sold in China, however. Manley said demand in China for smaller SUVs is focused on domestic brands, which offer strong value for money.

The platform strategy at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) suggests that the small Jeep would share its platform with a Fiat model, with the next-generation Panda city car a possible contender.

The obvious route to market is for Jeep to develop its own body and interior on the running gear of the next-generation Panda 4x4.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Jeep's owner, is announcing today five-year plans for each of its brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati and Ram..

It will also be the final strategy led by FCA boss Sergio Marchionne who retires next year.
