Default Rock Music - Rant

This past weekend, some of my family was at my place. I had one of Sirius's classic rock stations on and Queen - Under Pressure came on. The song starts and my 18 yr old cousin goes, "did they rip off Vanilla Ice"?

I spin around and ask if he's serious. He admitted that he had never heard the song before. So, I ask "what type of music do you listen to"? To which he responds, "Rock. Like AFI."

Has truly great music been replaced with garbage-emo-i-hate-my-parents music? Where will AFI be in 5 years? Where will they be in one!?!

I've lost faith in the youth of America.

AFI has been around for a while already, I listened to them when I was in high school, and I graduated college three years ago

it all depends on how you were raised. i was raised in a classic-rock-radio house (plus the old man's LPs), therefore i grew up knowing queen. your cousin's parents were probably listening to the top-40 station as your cousin grew up.

so ... blame your aunt and uncle.

I grew up in musical chaos: The Moody Blues, Beatles, Bee Gees, and Boston (Dad); Neil Diamond, Air Supply, and Elton John (Mom); Led Zeppelin, Duran Duran, Motley Crue (bro and sis). I'm so confused.

Yes it has. Examples include Panic at the Disco and Fallout Boy... these bands will not be remembered in 2 years.

Well you seem a little out of touch as well, AFI has been around for years. This latest album was like their seventh release or something.

I understand what you mean and all, but you realize if he's 18, he was born in 1988 right? If he wasn't raised around that kind of music, you can't expect him to know it. I grew up listening to Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, etc, because my that what my parents listened to...so it was different for me.

Ya know, with The Moody Blues, or Cream, or Alan Parsons or Adam and the Ants, I'd agree. But this is freaking QUEEN. They ruled top 40 stations, and still can be heard today.

Me, too!

I had Pavarotti, Streisand and Cat Stevens from Dad. Pink Floyd and Elvis from Mum. Cousins were Depeche Mode and REM. Other cousins New Kids and that crap.

they haven't been on top 40 stations in 30 years. the kid had a shot at MAYBE knowing Bohemian Rhapsody thanks to Wayne's World and that's about it.

But is an 18 year old more likely to know Ice, Ice Baby or Pressure?

Off.

You know what I mean. I'm saying, you poll a group of 18 year old's and I'm putting my money down that Vanilla Ice wins by a landslide.

You're sounding like the typical cranky old dude. Relax, I'm turning into one myself

Isn't it pretty normal for the current generation to not know a lot of the music from the previous generation? Many people don't realize that samples/riffs from some of their biggest hits actually come from older songs until they hear the older song.

Speaking of which, ever notice that most older people only listen to the same music they listened to in their late teens and twenties? It's normal for the older generations to hate the next one's music. The kids of today will hate THEIR children's tunes.
