4-cylinder oil filters - all same now?
For the past 6, the oil filters I've got from the dealer for our '97 Outback EJ25D have been about as big around as high, and white. Last oil change the filter I got was much smaller, and black. Already drained the oil so I used it, seemingly without issue. Was back at the dealer this weekend getting a filter for the other Outback (3,0 6) and thought I'd get the right filter for the 4 while I was there.
Was handed another little black one. Not acceptable... The parts guy (not the regular, a vacation-time weekend fill-in) said he was told "all 4 cylinder oil filters are the same." I drive 650 mi/wk and I'm not totally comfortable using an oil filter about the size of a D-cell flashlight battery. I still have the filter from my last change (I cut them open to check for particles, but I've been busy...) so I can go looking for them by part number if I have to, but I was hoping someone here would have the straight scoop on when all 4-cylinder engines became the same. Last I checked, K&N doesn't have a filter to fit the 4's, or I'd just use one of those... Thanks in advance...

You will be fine. I have the big oil filter on my 05 RS but it is the filter from a WRX. My wifes filter on her 06 is small. My original filter was small too but I started using the WRX filters becuase I bought a bunch of them at once.
And I would steer clear of the K&N oil filters. |

Rich,
Don't worry about the filter. They have changed the spec on them a couple of times. I started using the small WRX one on my RS before they officially changed it over. I was told the reason for the change was the headers on the WRX were too close to the filter and there was too much heat transfer. Since my EL headers we also very close to the large filter, I started using the small one. Over 20k mi later I am still doing fine. Don't worry about it... ps. How's the Porsche??? |

Since you opened the door to thread creep with your PS, I;ll take the opportunity to thank you again for your help with that transaxle. I have been so busy with the new job (and that 650 mi/wk commute...) that I was never able to follow up with you to make sure we were square on the money. I figured the crate credit balanced the core charge and we were, but I should have followed up better and I didn't, for which I apologize. If you need more from me to square the account, send me a PM and I'll make sure it's made right. FedEx was supposed to bill me for the transit but I don't think they ever did... The very week after that core was delivered to you a RennList 911 guy was desperate for a Type 911 transmission and I referred him to you, because I was sure you had one :-) -- I don't know if he followed up, but I did my part... I've uprated the Outback with Hawk ceramic pads and slotted rotors, GR2 dampers, new springs, and 205-50/15 Potenza Pole Position tires (911 takeoffs) on 6-1/2" wheels and even though the engine is all stock it has surprised its share of Audis... Oh - you asked about the Porsche... with the new job, there has been no time :-( ... I am hoping that with the onset of autumn and less yardwork that I'll be able to tinker throughout the winter. it's to the point now where I don't think it's going to be possible to finish off for the San Diego Parade next year, in which case, I don't know what my plans would be. Thanks again for all your help during the Subie engine transplant! |

Just to add, I too use a very small filter, but I stick with purolator.
