See how the forefoot of the Vibram runner strikes the ground first, absorbing all the shock and the heel barely touches. This means all that jarring energy that would be transmitted directly up the fibula/tibia to the knee and further up the femur to the hip and spine gets absorbed without the need for a thick EVA wedge under the heel. Look at nature... No other animals stride on their heels. Only shoe-clad humans.
Man, you are really making me want to try these out, I haven't been able to run at all the last few years due to a knee injury sustained from a 20 foot drop.

you should probably just try bicycling instead. But get fitted and keep your cadence high.

The shoes aren't going to magically cure you.

We talked to a guy at the last tri we did who switched to them and his ITB issues when running went away.

FWIW...both lotusdrift and DiscoGsus are now trying them...

I bike every day almost, I live about 100 yrds from a bike trail that runs 30 -34 miles. I just used to be really into running and miss it alot. I really do enjoy biking as well.

I've had a pair of these since June.

They are great for running, hiking, swimming (rivers/lakes) and lots of other activities/inactivity.

They get a lot of attention. Whether people love them or hate them, they feel entitled to come tell you about it.

Last time I wore mine to the grocery I had 5 strangers stop me to ask about them.
This is probably the reason I don't wear mine more often, I'm not always in the mood to answer the same questions every time I go out. I even had one lady bend over and start touching my feet.

They DO change your running stride, I've been a runner for a long time, (track/X-country in High School) and can verify that your stride WILL change when you run in these. No more heel striking (which isn't natural btw).

There are muscles in your foot/calf that aren't fully used when running with 'regular' shoes. Expect soreness after the first run with these, EVEN IF YOU RUN REGULARLY. That said, it is possible to do high mileage in these and there are dudes running marathons with Vibram's on.

Oh, and I recommend the KSO, I've heard that the strap on the Sprint model can irritate the skin.

Is the website really clever, or is coincidence that there's a VFF add at the top of the page now?!

I don't think that they will magically cure me, but they may help. I have tried running on the balls of my feet, and my knee did bother me less than usual afterwards but the mechanics felt all wrong in running shoes.

If I try these and they don't work I am out 70 bucks and have nice shoes to bum around in. ( I hate shoes and prefer barefoot when possible)

If they DO work, then I get to go back to doing something I really loved and miss and they are cheaper than the $120 New Balances I used to buy for running.

Either way it makes sense for me to at least try them out.

Didn't read much of the thread, but I've had a pair of KSO's for 5 or 6 months now. I've worn them kayaking, fishing, hiking, and out to the bar. They are one of the most comfortable "shoes" I've ever worn, once you get used to them. At first they made it seem like my toes were being spread apart too far, that feeling lasted all of a few hours.

The price is high, but IMO, they're worth it.

picked up a pair this weekend. so far so good, very comfortable to wear, putting them on the first time was difficult, second time was easy and now they slip on without a second thought.

i took the dog on a jog around the block, no long distances or anything yet, but i liked the way running in them felt. i'm definitely going to ease into it.

i do a cross fit style workout outdoors after work MTTh, so i'm looking forard to trying them in that respect.

This really isn't much of a statement. The vast majority of animals (and by vast, I mean every-single-one but a handful) are not bipedal. I don't think it's possible for a human to walk heel-toe while on all fours.

In other news, look at nature... no other animals can speak english. Only shoe-clad humans.

Kangaroos would be the closest analog to humans in terms of travel. When standing still, they rest down on their "heels" but when running (or rather, bounding), they keep their heels up and stay on their forefeet.

I don't think most people would actually like wearing these because of the adjustment period. The average shoe-clad human walks on his heels, runs on his heels, etc and will continue to do so as long as they are wearing shoes with EVA/gel/air padded heels. These require you to walk/run on the balls of your feet, forcing you to employ your body's built in shock absorption method and nothing else. The only time your heel touches ground is when you're standing still. The first couple outings with these, your arches will hurt as they get used to the extra strain they've been missing their entire lives.
Did you just read this book too?

Excellent. Check it out. He talks in depth of five fingers, and how the more padding in your shoes, the greater likelihood of injury. Great read with the university data there to back it up.

Kangaroos probably don't run 60 miles a week on sidewalks though do they.

If they did, they'd probably appreciate some Nike Air!

I heard about that somewhere. Daily Show perhaps? Sounded very interesting.

Yeah, the author was on The Daily Show.

It was a great book, I'd recommend it, especially to runners with joint problems.

Thumbs up

I've had KSO versions for a little while. What happened with my old shoes when I ran was my knees would eventually start to ache (unoperated torn cartilege in one knee doesn't help). With the VFFs I have had NO knee issues (credit to the change in running style/stride, I guess) even when running on concrete sidewalks. My calves are still getting used to the whole thing, though. Last week was the first week where they weren't really sore the next day. Just have to take it slow until your body adjusts.

Edit: The KSOs were a PITA to put on for the first dozen or so runs. Now they have stretched a little and go on without much drama.

i read 'god's middle finger' a while ago, and it involves a few tarahumara indian runners. they basically show up to ultramarathons, party and smoke pot the night before, drink all throughout the race, and clean the **** up. Barefoot.

So, while I can't help but think these shoes are absolutely retarded looking (my ex room mate marathoner used to wear them out to the bar), there does seem to be legitimacy in their design.
