In my WRX, when it barely registers on the temperature gauge. I don't push it over 3,000 rpm until it's 1/4 warmed up.
In my '97 Impreza, 15-45 seconds after I start it up. Then same with the RPMs.

It doesn't hurt to let your car warm up before mashing the pedal as long as you have a little patience.. Just keep in mind, pressure changes as temperature changes.

I personally wait until my gauge reaches the bottom middle line before i give it any real gas, though i only let it idle for a minute or so before i pull off. Everyone's different though, i suppose.

Having pixelated boxes representing amount of fuel is unnerving, because there's no way to know if it's a true representation of the amount of fuel left (and relative to what?). I'd rather see a needle indicate where the system's temperature is at (in a relative sense) and another needle identify how much fuel is in my tank. [/rant]

Back to the OP's question: I don't idle it for that long unless I'm waiting for someone: either I'm waiting for someone to get to my car, or someone to get out of my way (I live in an apartment building where everyone has a common parking area). Under normal circumstances, usually I will idle for no more than 20 seconds, and then go easy on the engine until the blue dummy light turns off. I just completed the specified break-in period, but I'm trying not to go over 4k rpm until I reach about 5000km on my odometer.
Which light is that? is it on the dash?

I let it idle for 20-30 seconds, play with my stereo or something, then start driving away. I'm easy on it though until it gets to operating temps.

let mine warm up for about 30 secs or 1 min, then easy on it till 1/4 way warmed up. I just let the fluids start flowing through he engine a bit, then just play nice for a little bit.

If your not into scrapping your window, throw some de-icer in a spray bottle and use that in the morning on your windows. Plus I spray it on the side mirrors too.

Yes, the blue "cold engine" light on the dash.

I wish I had a needle on the dash that would show me system temperature.

I usually give mine a few minutes. About the time it would take me to scrape off the windows. Then drive and I try not to do much more than 2500-3000 until she is warmed up.

Of note- when your temp gauge gets to operating temp that only means the coolant is at operating temperature. It takes longer for the oil to reach operating temp so coolant gauge at op temp doesn't mean give er hell. For me once it reaches op. temp on the coolant gauge I drive normally, but I'll give it a lot longer before I drive 'spiritedly'

How would you handle this at a drag strip where you literally start the car, run the track and shut it back down?

I've started my car before and ran back inside until the heater kicked in a couple times, but dang!

So, I guess in response to this thread: I start the car, check the oil pressure, blip the throttle to open the tgv's and then I'm on my way. Ever since the motor was built with the oversized forge pistons I baby it a little until I get out of the neighborhood. Stock I just started the car and left.

Well this thread isn't about drag cars. Second, most serious drag cars aren't expected to last 200k miles on the same engine.

I honestly fail to see how comparing drag racing to daily driving applies to this thread

#1. Make sure DC shoes, jacket, and hat are on.
#2. Drink at least 3-24oz Monster's.
#3. Make sure lots of people are around.
#4. Jump into car through open window.
#5. Push gas pedal hard enough so it feels like it's gonna go through the fire wall and hold it there.
#6. Make sure you're in first gear.
#7. Turn key to run position and immediately as the rpm's hit redline drop the clutch like you stole it.
#8. Car successfully started and you look like Ken Block in a Gymkahna.
#9. Start a bitch thread on NASIOC about how you have no idea why you blew your ringlands and why your clutch is toast.
10. Profit???

I turn the key to get the fuel system primed, then start it, then stay out of boost til coolant temp is at 80C minimum, then drive like crazy.

It doesn't. WRX's have the actual gauge. Other models don't have a gauge, they just have a light that's on when the engine is cold.

You don't race your wrx? My Lightning built motor will last me 100k and I don't wait for oil temps to be "normal"

lol good for you, I honestly don't know what you are expecting to get out of this...

If you are trailering your car to the track pushing it up to the line, firing it up and then making a pass and shutting down after you return yea I'll take a bet your motor won't last 100k.

But if your like me you drive your car to the track then spend time with the car running as you work your way up the line to make a pass then shut her down when you return then you probably never leave op temp anyways.....

But again I really don't know what you are trying to get out of this....
