My 1996 Legacy GT sedan has an automatic transmission (the only transmission availiable on that model year) and an annoying habit. The upshift from 1st to 2nd sometimes comes with a jerk. The jerk kind of feels like the downshift you get when you floor it on the highway in an automatic transmission car. It doesn't matter how gently or agressively I am accelerating. I thought the jerk might go away after the transmission "broke in" but the problem has persisted to the current mileage of 51,000. The jerk *may* occur more often when the tranny is cold.
I know I'm not the only person with this problem; in fact, the Car Talk guys mentioned in their web site review of this model that this car had the roughest 1st to 2nd shift they'd ever seen. Of course I didn't see anything about it in other reviews and I don't think the problem occurs in any other model years due to the transmission tweaks in '97. I haven't been able to find any service bulletins that cover it and the dealer I took the car to said he couldn't find a problem.
Can anyone suggest a method to fix this? Please post here and/or email me at:
